Ducati Still the Leader of the Pack
Desmodromic valves are controlled with a separate, dedicated cam lobe and lifter instead of the conventional valve springs used in internal-combustion engines.
The desmodromic configuration permits cams to open and close valves more quickly without the risk of valve float, which is likely when using a passive closing mechanism.
Ducati has used this valve configuration and subsequent variations since 1956 and is the only manufacturer to have applied it to standard production bikes and racing models.

Normally, the valve is operated by a "cam" system, which controls valve opening (down-stroke), while the valve "return", i.e.
In mechanical terms, the word desmodromic is used to refer to mechanisms that have different controls for their actuation in different directions.
By contrast, the movement of a door handle is not controlled by a desmodromic mechanism: this motion is only controlled in one (opening) direction, while the return is automatically obtained via a spring, in a less controlled manner.

Ducati has also manufactured engines with one, two, three or four cylinders; operated by pull rod valves and push rod valves; single, double and triple overhead camshafts; two stroke and even at one stage manufactured a stationary diesel engine, many of which were used as emergency pumps (eg for fire fighting).
On current Ducati motors, the valves are actuated by a standard valve cam shaft which is rotated by a belt driven by the motor directly.
Engineer Fabio Taglioni knew that desmodromic valves do not suffer from valve float at high engine speeds, thus a desmodromic engine is capable of far higher revolutions than a similarly configured engine with traditional spring-valve heads.

Sport Rider-Hands On: Desmodromic Valve Adjustment
The hardest valve to access is the exhaust valve on the rear cylinder.
Valves tend to sink into their seats as the motor wears in, so the clearance should get looser.
The factory says the valves should be inspected every 4500 miles, but Steve says that if you're doing your own maintenance, you can get away with just checking every 6000 miles once the engine has gone past the 10,000-mile mark.

 Ducati Motorcycles
Modern Ducatis remain among the dominant performance motorcycles available today partly because of the Desmodromic valve design, which is nearing its 50th year of use.
Desmodromic valves are closed with a separate, dedicated cam lobe and lifter instead of the conventional valve springs used in most internal combustion engines.
This allows the cams to have a more radical profile, thus opening and closing the valves more quickly without the risk of valve-float which is likely when using a "passive" closing mechanisms under the same conditions.

 Ducati Desmo Valves
The four valve design is less elegant, but has more effecient in use of space.
For the non-Ducatisti (and those who didn't notice in the picture above), the desmo design doesn't use valve springs to close the valve, instead using another rocker arm (and cam lobe) to push the valve closed.
This eliminates valve float, and was originated by Mercedes in the 50's when mettallurgy and technology made for weak valve springs and bent valves.

On current motors, the valves are actuated by a standard valve cam shaft which is rotated by a belt driven by the motor directly.
On older Ducati motors (prior to 1981) a solid shaft with a bevel-shaped gear on the end, mating with the valve cam shaft at 90-degrees was used.
Engineer Fabio Taglioni knew that desmodromic valves do not suffer from valve float at high engine speeds, thus a desmodromic engine is capable of far higher RPMs than a similarly configured engine with traditional spring-valve heads.

Desmodromic Valve Gear   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Desmodromic valve operating mechanism is where the camshaft controls both the opening and closing of the valve.
One benefit of this is that when the motor is over-revved, the valves are still controlled, whereas when they are returned by springs the valves can "float" and hit the piston.
Note that in the diagram, the springs are only used to close the valve the last fraction, to aid starting.

As I was scanning over the Velocette Parts Database before putting it online, I noticed at the bottom something called a Desmodromic Valve System, priced at a rather phenomenal, I thought, $2000.00 per unit (there are four).
As you probably know, a desmodromic valve system is a rather unique design in which the valve is closed by a rocker arm rather than a spring, eliminating valve float and also making it faster.
We do have four desmodromic valve systems available to sell at $2000.00 each that are complete units.

 Services @ Sigma Performance
A Ducati motorcycle is by definition a very special machine, a combination of simple elegant design and lightweight with the benefit of Desmodromic valve gear and the very latest in racing technology.
The complexity of the unique Desmodromic valve system and the unusual layout of the overall design means that racing requires a much higher level of technical expertise in the team than just about any other make.
We do everything the schedule requires plus we reset the valve clearances to the ones Ducati used to recommend (which stops most of that irritating rough running down low), check the alternator for tightness and balance everything to perfection.
