The Eagles : The Eagles/Desperado - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Eagles and Desperado were more country-oriented sets; On the Border and One of These Nights found them adding an extra guitarist and turning more to rock; Hotel California and The Long Run (a twofer released later in the series) were the group's superstar, arena rock sets.
But the complete album from which they come belongs as much to Leadon's country-steeped playing and singing and to Meisner's melodic rock & roll feel, which, on the release date, made it seem a more varied and consistent effort than it did later, when the singles had become overly familiar.
If Henley was the sole member of the Eagles underrepresented on their debut album, he made up for it on their second, the "concept" album Desperado.

 Eagles: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
Desperado possesses a commendable degree of thematic consistency, as every song both moralises and sparkles with the romance of the outlaws of the Old West.
The album is tied together nicely by the closing reprise of 'Doolin'-Dalton' and 'Desperado'.
The entire album is enjoyable, most of the lyrics are profound by Eagles' standards and the melodies are strong, but One of These Nights isn't sequenced well, so that the whole becomes less than the sum of its parts.

Eagles: Greatest Hits 1971-1975 - All CDs $5.99 and Free Shipping at yourmusic.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
On their first four albums, the Eagles were at pains to demonstrate that they were a group of at least near-equals, each getting a share of the songwriting credits and lead vocals.
All of which means that, unlike the albums from which they come, these songs make up a collection consistent in mood and identity, which may help explain why "Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" works so much better than the band's previous discs and practically makes them redundant.
Still, there must be more to it, since the album wasn't just a big hit, but one of the biggest ever, becoming one of the very few discs to cross the threshold of 20 million copies and competing for the title of best-selling album of all time.

Desperado, released in 1973, stands up quite well compared to the first album recorded by The Eagles--in fact, it might be one of their best overall efforts.
Desperado emphasizes the country roots of this group, and identifies their ties with other bands and musicians of this period, such as Poco, Pure Prairie League, J. Souther, and Jackson Browne.
Any album recorded by a great group is essential if you really want to have a full understanding of their music.

And what an album it was and is. After over a quarter of a century, it still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up it is so moving.
I have, in idle moments, wondered if maybe the album was planned as part of a movie soundtrack, either as a project-in-the-planning which never went down or a hey-let’s-write-a-soundtrack-and-see-if-we-or-someone-else-can-write-a-script-for-a-movie.

DESPERADO, their second release, ostensibly a concept album about an outlaw figure of the Old West, furthered their claim.
Recorded in London under the aegis of Glyn Johns, the set was marked by the quartet's highly measured playing, distinctive, high-flown harmonies, and accessible folk and country-flavored pop-rock.
The Eagles' sophomore album showed them developing their signature style, and achieving the radio-friendly sheen they would refine over the next two albums, then perfect on 1976's HOTEL CALIFORNIA.

Hmmm Desperado is the first Eagles song that I really loved to listen to, before I discovered the vaults full of their other recordings.
My first experience of this album was when I was about 10yrs old and my older cousin playing the LP and I was asking him who the cowboys were on the cover, I actually thought they really were cowboys....I was only 10 remember.
Desperado, is a great song but I dread it when I hear the beginning notes, immediately, I feel..like ohhh no, not yet...

Randy, That is an interesting idea and it very well could be true but I think the romantic in me still believes this album is based upon the Doolin/Dalton gang which formed up in the early 1890s and came to a bloody end in.....you guessed it, Coffeyville, Kansas in 1892.
Whether you believe this is an album about an outlaw gang from the wild west or a stuggling rock musician, everyone should do a little research on the Doolin/Dalton gang.
And "Saturday Night" is not on the Desperado album, it's on their first one, "The Eagles".

The Eagles kept themselves firmly immersed in the deep country ethos with their second album and wrote an ambitious concept album, telling the tale of a cowboy on the run.
The rest of the album presents a difficult batch of songs with which to associate or, to be honest, see much quality in.
Just starting to nose out of the country and western genre of rock with their music, this album would be the last release the Eagles would dedicate solely to the soft, lofting sounds of country music.

 Eagles - Desperado
The beautiful thing about it is that although it is a unified set of songs, it is not a rock opera, a concept album, or anything pretending to be much more than a set of good tunes that just happen to fit together.
It wasn't until halfway through recording the album that the Eagles and Glyn Johns realized they could string in order as an entity what they were putting down, and as a result only one of the songs, the "Bitter Creek" written after that realization, seems strained.
Asylum milked the first Eagles album for three hit singles, and there are at least that many lying in wait on this one.

 Country-Rock Roots
Their second album "Desperado" was an old west concept album that went nowhere commercially, despite the inclusion of the now-famous title track and the gorgeous "Tequila Sunrise".
By the beginning of 1974, because of Desperado's commercial disappointment coupled with some bad business decisions, the Eagles were flat broke.
So the responsibility has fallen to independent artists, to explore the fertile territory between country and rock and roll music, and put out records which don't necessarily fit neatly into a single established format, but are interesting and entertaining for that very reason.
