Tropical Recipes :: Uh Huh Her
Some of it seems disappointingly remedial ("The Letter," "Cat on the Wall"), but the best material ("The Desperate Kingdom of Love," "Who the Fuck?") just reconfirms that no matter how raw the British songwriter serves it up, the beauty of her work is undeniable.
She sounds like a naive twelve-year-old on the folksy tambourine-led "Pocket Knife", sexual longing personified on the rocking "Letter", furious banshee on "Who the F***", while the quiet acoustic "The Desperate Kingdom of Love" features what must be her most tender, least affected performance ever.
Vocally, PJ has never been better and the album features what must be the most varied performances she's given on one album.

 Carole King
Then she lost her Midas touch, and soon she was so desperate for a hit that she recorded an entire album of tunes from her 60s catalog.
The album was a total flop, but two of the tunes were covered by other artists - "Wasn't Born To Follow," which shortly afterwards appeared on a Byrds album, and "Hi-De-Ho," which soon became a Top 40 hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Sonically, the album shows no trace of hippietivity: it's King's usual crisp pop, mixing uptempo rock ("Main Street Saturday Night") and introspective ballads ("Sunbird"); she even dabbles in disco on the appropriately robotic "Disco Tech," which I don't think is a parody.

Amazon.co.uk: Music: Hand Over Your Loved Ones
Having already played the debut album from Wheatus to death I was, as were many others, desperate from new work from the group but nothing materialised.
Wheatus have stuck with their geeky, bad boy image and their modern college rock, but BEWARE, you won't be able to take this album out of your stereo once you've put it in.
All in all, I loved this album and for any of you who love a bit of rock and pop combined, this is the album for you.

 Hartford Advocate: Switchblade
Seven years since his last solo album, Iron Maiden vocalist Dickinson is still collaborating with producer/guitarist Roy Z and working in a similar vein as on 1998's The Chemical Wedding -- a darker, brooding and updated take on classic heavy metal.
Planetary Confinement was recorded in separate sessions with different musicians by founders Mick Moss and Duncan Patterson, both graduates of the Roger Waters school of desperate music.
Switchblade mold a dark and haunting atmosphere from slow, swirling sounds, repetition, and a gradual building up of simple parts into apocalyptic climaxes and brooding interludes.

 Fluke: Puppy, Switch,
Given that the singles from the Six Wheels album (and prior to this) are now well and truly deleated then this will serve good purpose for all those desperate to hear Flukes earlier material.
The new album, titled ' Puppy ' after the fifty foot high living sculpture of a highland terrier made entirely from flowers that stands outside the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, is to be released in August 2003 along with the latest single ' Switch '.
Disc 2 is a summary of their albums 'Six Wheels on my Wagon', 'Oto' and 'Risotto', whilst disc 3 is a collection of remixes from the various singles over the years.

 lyrics/the slang album/etc.
obviously slang showed that the boys are capable of writing more substantial lyrics, but i still look at that album as a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the grunge years.
of course, after slang failed they remade hysteria (again) and the new album is the least challenging thing they've ever done, both musically and lyrically.
their last 3 or 4 albums make you wonder what is sincere and what was made with album sales in mind...

Jackson Browne - Saturate Before Using
But the album has long since come to seem a timeless collection of reflective ballads touching on still-difficult subjects -- suicide (explicitly), depression and drug use (probably), spiritual uncertainty and desperate hope -- all in calm, reasoned tones, and all with an amazingly eloquent sense of language.
It's not often that a single album is sufficient to place a new performer among the first rank of recording artists.
One of the reasons that Jackson Browne's first album is among the most auspicious debuts in pop music history is that it doesn't sound like a debut.

Kasabian: Good Trip, Innit? - New York Times
Tracks from their album have played on some of the top hits on American television, "Desperate Housewives," "The O.C." and "C.S.I.," and the band landed a plum spot opening for Oasis this fall.
Kasabian's album has reached platinum status in England and has sold more than 150,000 copies in the United States propelled by the lead single "Club Foot," a hive of buzzing guitars and tribal beats that manages to be simultaneously foreboding and danceable.
In the middle of a grueling months-long world tour for their self-titled debut album, they finally had a bit of downtime and decided - of all possible things - to spend it visiting Alcatraz.

And the most desperate gimmick of all might be that with "Hours," Bowie has managed to pull it all together again and make the new album his most consistent piece of work since "Ziggy Stardust" -- and his most satisfying since "Scary Monsters," in 1980.
"Hours" is also the first major-label album to be made available for download on the Web.
Which makes the new album a revelation, but also something of an affront.

Jude is the patron saint of desperate and difficult circumstances.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Heated - Big Sugar at Epinions.com
Heated, their fourth full-length album, is the end-product of that labor, with eleven of the twelve tracks being originals.
A nameless, unlisted reggae-flavored instrumental is also included though it only reinforces the scattershot, unfocused quality of the album.
The echo effects, vocal overdubs, and other manipulations come off as gimmicky and give many songs a slightly desperate edge, as if studio trickery was necessary to try and mask shortcomings of composition and recording.

Ciara - Goodies : album review
From the seductive picture of the girl tipped to become the new queen of hip-hop, or specifically 'rhythm and crunk' it's obvious that Goodies is going to be one of those sexy albums - the type that has booties shakin' and serving to fuel plenty of grinding.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, but as with the rest of the tail end of Goodies it highlights a desperate need for an individual identity.
Thankfully that is all quickly forgotten by the time Oh starts, given that it's by far and away the album's best track.

Pitchfork: Top 50 Albums of 2004
It's an album of brand new songs you've known all your life-- instantly catchy but strange, with an agelessness that suggests Banhart found his tunes in an old steamer trunk.
But how do you really measure the impact of this album in the context of "now?" The recording is new, of course, but the music is irreversibly of another age.
Funeral could open on a black winter night in any North American city, inside the mind of anyone trapped by youth and desperate for a way out.

 Amazon.com: Music: Facelift
It seems like a band's debut album is either a desperate cry for help because the artist in question hasn't found their sound yet, or it's an underrated masterpiece, and in the case of Alice In Chains, the latter is certainly true.
Alice In Chains' debut album captures them in an excellent music-making state (as most of their albums do.) The band on this album doesn't totally sound like the band that would achieve stardom in the mid-nineties, and I mean that in a good way.
Often regarded as their best album by metal fans, Alice in Chains' debut on album, "Facelift", is one that I've grappled with extensively over the years.

Quite often an album of rare and unreleased material is a hastily put together cash grab for the record company and mainly directed towards the obsessive fan who has every album and is desperate and hungry for more.
I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to a new Clutch album since the 1998 release of “The Elephant Riders”.
What Clutch has as a secret weapon to unleash upon the listener and that helps set them apart from so many average rock bands these days is the ever witty story teller Neil Fallon, who is the vocalist and lyricist.

 bonfire
The Let There Be Rock album was unleashed in 1977 and was the band's greatest testimonial yet to the sheer might of Rock 'n Roll at a time when the English punk movement were sneering at the form but desperate to create something as singularly intense as this.
Both the High Voltage album and the more focused TNT effort whit its spare sound that would later be recaptured on the Ballbreaker album were released in 1975.
But despite its relative refinement the album still sounded like a street fight and is ironically one of the band's best hooligan recordings.

The album had a very desperate atmosphere and it is an essential album for everyone who wants to hear the development of Israeli prog.
This is a great and essential album equally influenced by the Symphonic rock of Gentle Giant and Yes and by the stoned Jazz-rock of the Canterbury scene, in spite of all of these influences they managed to maintain their own identity and are highly important band.
They called themselves Acharit Ha'Yamim (Apocalypse), although not a prog band they were rather important and influential and their sole album (now considered a milestone of Israeli Rock) comprised psychedelic hard rock with strong Blues and soul influences and some progressive overtones, this album also failed commercially and the band broke-up.

But the sound the band made could never match the sound in his head, and slowly Ashcroft realised that he needed McCabe if they were to make the album he was desperate to create.
The lead-off single from The Verve’s third album was “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, and while it may have only managed to ascend to one-hit-wonder status in the US, it was the start of something massive in the UK.
“Slide Away” and “Blue” are stargazing pop from their debut album A Storm In Heaven, layered and hazy but still propellant, murder fantasy one moment, LSD reverie the next.

Amazon.co.uk: Music: Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
The debut album from TV on the Radio, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes singles this multi-racial Brooklyn trio out as a markedly different band from many of their new-wave New York peers.
This is the debut album by this New York trio.
Accordingly, the album's best track, "Staring at the Sun", is little more than a kaleidoscope of voices drifting in and out of focus--although rock trivia fans will doubtless be interested to know that distant psychedelic squall comes courtesy of Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner.

 Kevin Hearn Biography
He stayed at the H-Wing of the Princess Margaret Hospital, where he fought for his life and began writing what would become his second album, "H-Wing." The album is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, transcending desperate situations, and dealing with one's mortality.
Hearn was working with his bandmates in the Barenaked Ladies on the recording of their multi-platinum album "Stunt" in 1998 when he started to have pains and experienced rapid weight loss.
Now completely cancer-free for a number of years, and wanting to put that chapter in his life behind him, Hearn knew that he would make the new album, "Nightlight," lighter in tone, with a "life goes on" mentality streaming throughout its twelve tracks.

 Lodger by David Bowie CD
Bowie's Singing is almost desperate at times and he and Eno are working in the sound textures to give Lodger a timeless sound.
At times manically playfull, it sounds as though Bowie is blowing the dust from his voice after the preceding, better known albums.
Although some songs don't really gel (DJ) this album as a whole is entertaining, edgy and strangely unsettling.

Hear/Say: America's College Music Magazine - Reviews - Albums - East River Pipe: The Gasoline Age
And the nearly 10-minute "Atlantic City (Gonna Make A Million Tonight)," arguably the album's most striking and vividly-worded tune, brings The Gasoline Age to a grand and heavy-hearted peak with bits on suicide-contemplation and desperate hope threaded through a slow climax, before the album-closing "Don't Hurry" fades into nothing.
And the album's lyrics beg to be heard; Cornog, who spent years working dead-end jobs before hard-core drinking left him unemployed and, for a short while, sleeping in a Jersey train station, has a unique background of experiences that feeds into his words.
Recorded in his modest home studio in New Jersey, the album sketches out tales of hard luck and choked up retrospect without luxurious orchestration, and the personal approach fares beautifully.

Bruce Springsteen : Devils and Dust - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
While the characters that roam through Devils & Dust are similarly heartbroken, desperate and down-trodden, they're far removed from the criminals and renegades of Nebraska, and the album doesn't have the political immediacy of Ghost's latter-day Woody Guthrie -styled tales -- themes that tied together those two albums.
Two of the new album's songs, "The Hitter" and "Long Time Comin'," were actually written and performed on The Ghost of Tom Joad tour.
The visit is now complete, with a 12-song album, Springsteen's first release of all-new material since The Rising in July 2002.

Amazon.com: Devils & Dust [DUALDISC]: Music
Some call it Nebraska II, but his second acoustic album was not a repeat of his first--the characters and settings had changed, and their circumstances were more expressly desperate, and social--though it did share the same interest in what happens to people whose isolation or marginal status renders them invisible.
After a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter.
These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after.
