Ward and June Cleaver have moved away, and now Wisteria Lane is home to a more modern cast of characters: the Ritalin-gobbling minivan mom; the Stepford wife channeling Martha Stewart; the randy former runway model and bored hausfrau with a thing for her 17-year-old lawn boy; the ditsy divorcee looking for love with.
The set belongs to "Desperate Housewives," the Sunday night soap opera that has saved ABC from its mortal slumber - just as surely as the slightly subversive dramedy has jump-started the careers of its cast of talented actresses, most of whom had reached that age in Hollywood when the casting calls slow.
One of the things that makes "Desperate Housewives" unique is the fact that the show is propelled by women, by their relationships, their points of view.

Court files describe some of the desperate lives of the 15 women allegedly killed by Robert Pickton: shoplifting, soliciting, track marks, scars, bruises, next of kin: unknown.
Despite their legalistic shorthand, they make it clear the women who vanished were leading the most marginal of existences: addicted, alienated from families and without permanent homes.
The missing women of the Downtown Eastside were drug users and sex trade workers with more desperate things on their minds.

Heading into the Australian winter, roughly 10 months after birth, the small creatures stop producing sperm and enter an intense, two-week mating season with a finite store of the means to pass on their own genes.
Some have proposed that males with more competitive sperm create more viable offspring, but this hypothesis has yet to be unequivocally demonstrated, largely because it is difficult to distinguish whether such survival is the result of better fathers or more mothering from females.
But because the male Antechinus kills himself in the process of mating-and most females only live for one year-the researchers could study the effects of polyandry both in the lab and in the wild.

Weird, to think "Desperate Housewives" sprang from a mother's love -- specifically, the mother of creator Marc Cherry, formerly a producer on "The Golden Girls." As he explained to critics in July, Cherry believed all that woman aspired to be was the perfect wife and mother.
Gynocentric though it is, hints are dropped in the pilot that the men on Wisteria Lane have a few tricks of their own to be revealed.
Having said that, look for the "Housewives" husbands to play a larger role in these desperate lives, while allowing the women to run the show.
