 NATURAL SATELLITE FACTS AND INFORMATION
Several moons are thought to be captured asteroids; others may be fragments of larger moons shattered by impacts, or (in the case of Earth's Moon) a portion of the planet itself blasted into orbit by a large impact.
Most moons in the solar system are tidally locked to their primaries, meaning that one side of the moon is always turned toward the planet.
Exceptions are Saturn's moon Hyperion, which rotates chaotically due to a variety of external influences, and the outermost moons of the gas giants, which are too far away to become 'locked' (an example is Saturn's moon Phoebe).

Larissa (la-ris'-a, Greek Λάπισσα) is the fifth of Neptune's known moons.
It was first discovered by Harold Reitsema based on ground-based stellar occultation observations in 1981, and given the temporary designation S/1981 N 1.
The moon was not recovered until the Voyager 2 flyby in 1989 when it received the designation S/1989 N 2.

If the sizes of the moons are expressed relative to their primary (the planet they orbit) there are still more surprises.
Being close to Jupiter (it is the innermost of the Galilean moons) the planet's massive gravity stretches the moon by some 100m and locks its rotation so the same side always faces the planet.
When it was discovered in 1978 it was realised that images previously thought to be of just Pluto had actually represented both the planet and its huge moon, and estimates of the planet's size had to be revised downwards.

An annular eclipse is one in which the moon is too small to completely cover the sun, so that a thin ring, or annulus, of the sun's photosphere remains visible at mid eclipse.
This was caused by the moon's proximity to perigee at the time, giving it a slightly larger apparent size, covering those features first on the west limb, and then on the east limb.

TRITON: Triton, the largest of Neptune's moons (almost the size of earth's moon) that circles the planet in a retrograde direction which is the direction opposite to the rotation of the planet it's orbiting, at a steeply inclined orbit of 157 degrees.
Scientists do not know how this moon could have this sort of activity, but they guess it could be duw to the sun penetrating through Triton's transparent surface and melting the ice from below, thereby causing a local pressure build-up of gas.
This is because it is spinning in the wrong direction and this fact, when combined with that of the moon's strong tidal interaction with Neptune, the moon's orbit is slowly decaying.

The moons are organized on the poster by the planet they orbit (top to bottom, with increasing distance from the Sun) and their position relative to the planet (left to right, with increasing distance from the planet).
