  'Final Destination 3' - Zap2it
That, after all, is the premise and the allure of the "Final Destination" films, in which a handful of people lucky enough to escape a disaster are hunted down by the unseen hand of an implacable predator -- death, fate, karma, whatever -- and meet their fates in gruesome, violent and insanely complicated ways.
It's the slasher film reconfigured as a Rube Goldberg construction, and part of the fun is watching director James Wong and his co-writer, Glen Morgan -- who sat out the first sequel, but return for this new installment -- lead us through each new setting with obvious glee.
The second film had a more diverse selection of victims-to-be, and let them spend a little time discussing what was happening to them, and why; it gave the film a little zing of smarts and soul.

Final Destination 2 (2003) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
Though an appropriate moniker for this film might be “anyone can die at any time,” meaning no one in the cast is safe enough in their character to make it to the end credits, the film still rolls along like any other horror film.
One would be a fool to consider this film “high art,” as it was obviously not intended to be that type of film, but the filmmakers probably won’t lure in anyone to the theater who is not already a fan of this type of film or a fan of the first film.
It is hard to say whether fans of the first film will enjoy the second as true fans of horror films tend to be quite picky about complimenting sequels, as their requirements tend to be higher than the general population.

Final Destination 3 Set Visit - Hollywood North Report
Each film in the series introduces us to a group of young adults, who, after accepting the “grim” realization that death is stalking them, set about trying to figure out why…and more importantly, how.
Just as in the first two films, when the premonition comes true, those who survive the accident are forced to deal with the repercussions of forestalling their fate.
During a short break in the filming, on the soundstage that houses the Mephistophelean boarding platform for the rollercoaster, director James Wong elaborates further: “We really felt we had to do something that was different from the first two films—add another element.

Plot:Set six years after the original Final Destination film, the latest installment in the series centers around a high school senior who has a premonition of a fatal roller coaster accident involving herself and all her friends.
"Final Destination 3" doesn't connect to the first two movies via it's new fresh faces, but it does keep the continuity chains strong by throwing the audience mentions of flight 180, the "order that they were supposed to die in" scenario, and the highway accident from "Final Destination 2".

The film's setting is a town called Verplanck, N.Y., where everyone drives a Yugo -- a wonderful running gag in itself as well as a plot point in the mystery about who killed Mona Dearly (Midler) by cutting her car's brake lines.
Destination's involvement as the film's domestic distributor resulted, according to chairman and CEO Barry London, from an approach by Jonathan Dana, the film's production consultant.
Destination, London said, "was always targeting the film for a first-quarter 2000 release, looking at the production and postproduction schedules and when we could make the release date without totally driving Bart and Al and everybody crazy to get the movie finished and allowing enough time for the movie to get finished properly.

Movie Review - Final Destination 3 - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
That's how the "Final Destination" films work, and if it seems counterintuitive to give away so much up front, the series has made it work with macabre humor and devilishly clever setups.
Part 2 was a pale imitation of the original, done by newcomers who clearly missed the subtle touches that had made the first one work.
As these three films have proven, the last thing you want to do is try to extend your life past its expiration date.

 The 11th Hour
Don't be mislead by the film's teen cast; the sensibility is decidedly adult, bearing a greater likeness to recent non-slasher fare such as Stir of Echoes or The Sixth Sense than any Dimension-Miramax offerings.
The characters are well-drawn and intriguing, the acting is terrific, and while there are moments of levity throughout, Final Destination largely plays it straight, and to the film's advantage.
Still, however, this is a minor complaint (and New Line, the ending of the film is a major one) and Final Destination remains a movie worth seeing for its performances, writing and (for the majority of time, anyway) refreshingly thoughtful take on age-old subject matter.

Destination managed to create a lot of buzz for its films, such as 2000's "Eye of the Beholder" with Ashley Judd and Ewan McGregor and 1999's "Whipped" starring Amanda Peet, but their releases fell flat when it came to ticket sales.

Audiences expect to see an impressively executed disaster during the films opening moments and a slew of creative, gory deaths throughout the remaining film.
Despite the fact that neither had a hand in the second film, we wind up with a bit of the best of both worlds when it comes to the third film in the series.
As with the previous films in the series, death follows those who made it off the coaster alive and claims them one by one in gruesomely original ways.

Final Destination II has nothing new to add to the formula, but the formula alone is strong enough to support a sequel.
I suppose it's gauche to compliment a film for its ingenious use of gore, but there are some great scenes - a dude gets trisected by a flying fence (don't ask!), a woman is decapitated by an elevator, another victim literally implodes when struck by a falling object.
Of course, Final Destination II is fantasy, but it makes one point about fear that would have added a lot to Moore’s film: we like to be scared.

The DVD includes a spiffy letterboxed print of the film, with Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 options, plus three commentary tracks a moderately interesting short documentary on test screenings, the film's extremely different original ending, and a perfectly awful, utterly unnecessary "documentary" about a so-called psychic.
It's smart, for one thing, while most of these films are written down to what the filmmakers assume is the level of their audiences.

Destination was formed in October 1998 with $100 million in insurance-backed financing by former DreamWorks finance executive Baum and former Orion Pictures co-head Steve Stabler with the intent of producing, acquiring and distributing a total of 12 moderately budgeted films annually.
