Tiny Mix Tapes Reviews: Destroyer Music Review
All of this is to say that the experience of this album takes place in a disruptively invasive commercial context, and this compels me to consider it from a consumer perspective.
Destroyer's new release is called Your Blues, and like its predecessor, it is filled with quirky and inventive pop songs packed with sultry harmonies and an immense level of musical intuitiveness.
Destroyer was a relatively new group to my ears until I learned that it was the brainchild of Dan Bejar, best known for his time with the pristine indie pop of the New Pornographers.

Your Blues is Destroyer's vainglorious retreat from the American rock'n roll tradition, in the wake of their bloated and oft-maligned (and oft-praised) magnum opus, This Night, which quietly assaulted the bankrupt college rock arena of 2002.
His new album, Destroyer's Streethawk: A Seduction, is the most potent collection of pop songwriting in a long, long time.
Destroyer has not been the only vehicle for Bejar's distinct songwriting; he is also a main contributor on the much acclaimed New Pornographer's Mass Romantic (Mint).

In 1998 Destroyer added a rhythm section to the mix and went into a real studio to record City Of Daughters, a sparsely produced but engagingly catchy batch of pop songs in which Bejar’s inventive lyrics began to evolve into an obtuse and poetically original voice.
By the time the band’s fourth album, Streethawk: A Seduction, hit the streets in 2001, Destroyer was poised for greatness and the critical acclaim flowed freely.

 Destroyer: Destroyer's Rubies (2006): Reviews
This is the defining Destroyer work because of its size and scope, because of its melodicism ("Painter in Your Pocket" the hottest pop song Bejar's authored yet), because of the caliber of its musical chops, and because of the shots Bejar continues to fire.
Destroyer’s Rubies is one of those rare albums whose literary value is so compelling as to make any imperfections simply blend in as an essential part of the storyline.
Destroyer's Rubies is an inadvertent Guide To Destroyer - every defining quirk, every 70's pop nod and ill-advised but forgivable falsetto is condensed and framed, only without becoming something fans of Bejar will have all heard before.

The studio sessions for "Destroyer" were the first time that the band members as songwriters had worked with outsiders, and they discovered that the outsider view could be a critical forum for feedback.
Bob felt that the track was an unrealized piece on the album and that the introduction riff was not real good "rock." He has also suggested that the riff should not have been used on the song, even though that was how Gene had presented it in demo form.

Destroyer is one of Kiss' most experimental studio albums, but also one of their strongest and most interesting.
But it was the aforementioned Peter Criss ballad, "Beth," that made Destroyer such a success; the song was a surprise Top Ten hit (it was originally released as a B-side to "Detroit Rock City").
Also included is a song that Nirvana would later cover ("Do You Love Me?"), as well as an ode to the pleasures of S&M, "Sweet Pain." Destroyer also marked the first time that a comic-book illustration of the band appeared on the cover, confirming that the band was transforming from hard rockers to superheroes.

Destroyer: Your Blues - PopMatters Music Review
Where the last Destroyer album This Night found Bejar sounding like a burnt-out Billy Corgan on lithium, this album strips away the rock trappings of the electric guitar/bass/vocals arrangements in favor of keyboards and acoustic guitars.
The other key to this album is that Bejar has fine-tuned his eccentric brand of Bowie by way of Nick Drake pop by trimming away many of the kitsch references that often littered his work.
The one constant that remains in place is the willfully obtuse lyrics that have become a signature of a Destroyer album.

In his seventh full-length as Destroyer, Daniel Bejar doesn't just cross it, he dances on top of it, piling metaphor on fractured image, embedding assonance and inside jokes into even the briefest snippets.
Destroyer's Rubies is a mass of crisscrossing themes, sardonic sketches and self-lacerating putdowns, but I think one of its main ideas is the friction between life and art, the ever-present balancing act between sex and success and self-expression.
There's a buoyancy to "Rubies,” with its rifle-shot drums and wordless sung choruses that carries you through its nine minutes, a simple rock joy in the attack of "3000 Flowers," a twisted love anthem in "Painter in your Pocket" that doesn't need to be analyzed to be enjoyed.

Musically, what hooks there are tend to be layered and understated; most of the songs on the album eschew the immediately catchy in favor of the subtle and gradual, with different sections building up and bleeding into each other over Bejar’s nasally sing-speak voice, but no single section dominating.
Instead, Bejar has succeeded in creating an album of great poetic craft and artistic integrity which, while not deviating greatly from the eleven-year-old band’s formula, further refines and solidifies it.
On the scale with which Anubis weighs the sins of the dead, this album comes up a bit heavier than the feather of Ma’at, but the crocodilian judge Ammit is unlikely to devour its heart.

After their first three records, Low began to move away from the slow, dirgy aspects of their music and began to embrace more of a rock and roll/pop ethos.
Instead, we are treated to thirteen songs of pure mid-tempo rock goodness, ranging in sound from the familiar pop female-vocal sound of songs like "California" to the synth heavy darkness of "Monkey".
The album is full of the trademark feedback heavy guitars and somber moods that have always graced Low records, and drives harder than any of their previous recordings.

Aside from Bejar, the only musicians on the album are “JC/DC” (New Pornographers bassist/producer John Collins and the Smugglers’ guitarist David Carswell), who also co-produced the first three Destroyer albums.
Despite what would seem to be drastic changes in instrumentation and style, Your Blues is surprisingly similar to the albums that preceded it: whatever style Bejar chooses to work in, his own idiosyncratic approach to songwriting and arrangement seems to dominate, relegating all other variables to a minimal level of importance.
Fortunately, the rest of the album more or less avoids this problem, as the synthesized orchestral arrangements are more subtly integrated at strategic moments, heightening the overall effect of Bejar’s songs, and defining the album’s unique “orch-coustic” aesthetic.
