Destry Rides Again is a 1939 western film directed by George Marshall, starring James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich, Mischa Auer, Charles Winninger, Brian Donlevy, Allen Jenkins, Irene Hervey and Una Merkel.
When the new sheriff is murdered for refusing to look the other way during a rigged poker game, the younger Destry takes up his father's star and must choose between his principles of nonviolence and the need for force to enforce the law.
In the film, the conventions already long established in the genre are challenged and turned to comic effect: instead of the men saving the day through gunfights, you have women saving the men.

This is the conundrum that faces me in reviewing Destry Rides Again and The Flight of the Phoenix, two films completely separate in time and subject matter, but which both rate about the same in terms of their achievement.
Stewart is surprisingly authoritative in the role of Destry, Jr., neither as dithering nor as homespun as he is in subsequent roles; it's easy to understand his success without a pistol, as he doesn't need to emphasize points with gun blasts.
The Destry Rides Again platter is bare-bones, while The Flight of the Phoenix includes English, Spanish and Portuguese trailers--essentially the same trailer each time with different voice-over and subtitles.

Once again, Dietrich was playing a lusty chanteuse but this time she was going for a more unglamorized look, one that was far removed from the exotic, artfully lit films she made with Josef von Sternberg.
She had struggled with a number of poor films in the late 1930's (under a contract with Paramount) and her acceptance of the part of Frenchy was a risky move for the actress.
Destry Rides Again has been filmed numerous times; first as a Tom Mix oater in 1932 which followed Max Brand's original novel the closest, again in 1939, and as an Audie Murphy western in 1954 simply titled Destry.

 Video Review: Destry Rides Again
Destry Rides Again (1939) tells the story of how people overcome their challenges to clean up the rebellious town of Bottleneck in Hollywood's old west.
Only Destry has some "peculiar ideas for a deputy sheriff": he doesn't advocate six-shooters or showdowns as a means to justice and he won't even carry a gun.
Destry demands that the rule of law prevail, but ultimately he must enforce the rule of law with violence or at least the threat of violence.

Well, sniffs the source(s) that links the two films as "versions of" each other---whatever the heck that term means---and some that link the 1939 film as a remake of the 1932 film---that should be quite enough.
In 1939's "Destry Rides Again", James Stewart goes unarmed as a matter of choice; in the 1932 "Destry Rides Again", Tom Mix does likewise but not as a matter of choice.
Such sources (and they are rarer than they once were) would do well to watch both the 1932 and 1939 "Destry Rides Again" films, and take notes, although such sources ordinarily wouldn't be caught dead watching any 1932 film, or any B-western for that matter.
