In the Order Desulfovibrionales, the organisms are all similar in that most are anaerobic, dissimilatory sulfate- or sulfur-reducing bacteria ( www.mhhe.com/biosci/cellmicro/prescott/outlines/ch22.mhtml).
This means that they use elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds as electron acceptors during anaerobic respiration.
