Detasseling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Detasseling is the act of removing the pollen-producing tassel from a corn (maize) plant.
Mechanized detasselers exist, the largest producer of which is Hagie Manufacturing Co. of Clarion, Iowa; however, detasseling by hand is still necessary due to the variation in height of corn plants.
Detasseling work is typically performed by children in their early teens; as such, it serves as a typical rite of passage (for many, it is their first job) in rural areas of the Corn Belt.

It was called detasseling, and if you were a middle-class teenager, living in northern, rural Illinois, it was a rite of passage — a character builder — and you hated it with every fiber of your being.
Detasselers received special agricultural exemptions, unless you failed to meet a specific height, which I believe meant you had to sign a waiver. It seemed that whatever the short kids didn't have in height, they made up for with their enthusiasm.

Detasseling is the process of pulling tassels off the tops of cornstalks in seed fields (corn that is grown to be used for seed) so that two genetically different strains of corn can cross-pollinate.
Detasselers can’t slack off — they are graded on their work at the end of the day.
Once a detasseler turns 16, he can apply to become a supervisor, or “crew boss.” The crew boss drives the tractor, decides on breaks and grades the detasselers on their work.

 Maternal Inheritance and Maternal Effects
The original approach to develop hybrid corn seed required the manual detasseling of the female parent to prevent self-pollination.
Because it was realized that manual detasseling of corn plants would not be required if male sterile system could be developed, attempts were made to apply the two types of male sterility systems, genic and cyotplasmic male sterility.
These seed stocks had to be manually detasseled, and its hybrid performance was not as good as the previous material, but it did provide a source of seed that was resistant to the disease and saved the United States from losing the entire hybrid corn harvest that year.

In order to study the effects of various detasseling practices on seed development and seed production of maize plants, a trial was carried during three growing seasons.
This work included five types of detasseling (manual, male-sterile, whorl pull-off, mechanical and control) and three genotypes in their fertile and sterile versions (lines A,B and the hybrid CMS 355).
The results showed that, for field hybrid corn seed production, the use of manual detasseling or sterile-male are the recommended practices.
