Detour (1945 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Detour is a 1945 film noir cult classic that stars Tom Neal, Ann Savage, Claudia Drake and Edmund MacDonald.
To preserve the films right-to-left orientation used in the cross-country scenes, the movie's director reversed many of the hitchhiking shots so that now the cars are on the wrong side of the road.
The movie was adapted by Martin Goldsmith and Martin Mooney (uncredited) from Martin Goldsmith's novel, and was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer.

Detour is one of the flest film noir ever produced during the classic 1935 to 1955 period.
Detour spins the forbidding tale of Al Roberts (Tom Neal), a piano-player in a smoky New York nightclub.
Certainly, a lot of the classic film noir movies draw their themes from existential ideas, but a good noir doesn't need existentialism to be great.

Detour starts off horribly, and turns into a pretty good flic-i-tation, so hang in there with this one.
In 1992, Detour was re-made, starring Tom Neal's son, Tom Neal, Jr., usually virtually indentical dialog from the original film.
By the way, the only movie poster I've been able to find with a vintage Lincoln on it is from the 1975 flic, The McCullochs.

Combustible Celluloid film review - Detour (1945), Edgar G. Ulmer, Tom Neal, Ann Savage, dvd review
Detour, for those who have not seen it, may be the greatest achievement in B-movie making in history.
In a lesser movie, that would have been the whole plot, but Goldsmith and Ulmer are more interested in the dynamic between the two characters, and that plot never comes to pass.
Perhaps the answer is that Detour is one of those movies that pokes a hole in the whole "auteur" theory, and that two artists were responsible for such a great movie.

Detour released in 1945 Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and shot in 6 days for a very small budget, is a masterpiece and is very entertaining.
Detour was released in 1945, and it looks good and old-fashioned, because of the song that is sung "I can't believe that your in love with me" which is a song from the early 1940's maybe even the 1930's, which of course wasn't old when this movie was made.
Detour for those reasons is extremely offbeat, considering when it was made, (Trust me I've seen tons of movies from that era) rating 4 stars out of 4 stars.

 Savant Review: DETOUR
Detour was not filmed solely in front of a rear-projection screen, and is not the cheapest film ever made, as is often repeated in reviews.
Savage is as shrill as a raw nerve and as jarring as fingernails on a chalkboard, and her Vera is a disheveled, unredeemed tramp.
It is a sad state of affairs when movies appear to be unrestorable; one wonders if some archive here or overseas has another original print in better condition, or one with damage occurring in different places.

This movie from Hollywood's poverty row, shot in six days, filled with technical errors and ham-handed narrative, starring a man who can only pout and a woman who can only sneer, should have faded from sight soon after it was released in 1945.
``Detour'' tells the story of Al Roberts, played by Tom Neal as a petulant loser with haunted eyes and a weak mouth, who plays piano in a nightclub and is in love, or says he is, with a singer named Sue.
Most critics of ``Detour'' have taken Al's story at face value: He was unlucky in love, he lost the good girl and was savaged by the bad girl, he was an innocent bystander who looked guilty even to himself.

"Detour" was so much applauded by film buffs, it has now reached classical cult status in film lore and is even revered by noted directors such as Martin Scorsese.
It was first held-up by the French movie critics as a work of true art, when they discovered the neglected film in 1950.
Al takes a detour from his original destination as he decides he can't see Sue like he is, and turns back to the diner in Nevada where he was first seen before the flashback started and he was hitching a ride in the rain back east.

Detour is far from the example of intentionally alienating process shots and expressive use of bad acting that I'd hoped for.
Toward the end of the movie, Al's voiceover tells us, "If this were fiction, I'd fall in love with Vera..." and he spins out a plot that would make a much more conventional and satisfying movie that the one we're trapped in at the moment.

It is a disjointed movie, filled with non-sequiturs and broadly pitched performances that take the movie out of the realm of the here and now and into the land dreams and hallucinations.
The movie is straightforward enough in telling us all this, but it is riddled with those non-sequiturs I mentioned, those strangely out of place coincidences.
This has a curious side effect: Detour may well be the only film in history that improves in inverse proportion to the quality of the print.

The Detour is the story of a young woman´s obsession with a charismatic older man. Semi-autobiographical, it is Dutch director Frouke Fokkema´s third film - and making it is anything but a detour as far as Sigma Pictures´ Matthijs van Heijningen is concerned.
It was a defining moment in her life and one to which she has returned more than once, initially in her 1981 stage play, De omweg (The Detour); then, more recently last summer, when she directed a screen version.
Like Fokkema´s first two films, The Detour is about obsession, but it promises to be the most intense of the three.
