Topic: Detritovore

  Topic4
Also, organic cycles such as the water cycle, the recycling of the respiratory products of animals (carbon dioxide) in photosynthesis, and the transpiratory return of water to the atmosphere in plants all play major roles as well.
Autotrophs - also known as producers, they can make their own food - main producers are photosynthesizers, which utilize the sun's energy and convert it into chemical energy, which they use to build their bodies.
Detritovore - organisms that feed by ingesting dead organisms (for example - crabs, earthworms and vultures).

The fact that "bloom" and "crash" cycles were common among organisms that depend on exhaustible accumulations of dead organic matter for their sustenance was not widely known.
Detritovores provide clear examples, but there are others, and we shall take a close look at some of them in the final chapter.
Accustomed ways of behaving and thinking tend to persist; this is probably as true of the detritovorous habits of Homo colossus as it was true of earlier human folkways.

Detritovore Food Chain -- This chain most often involves decaying organisms and usually refers to bacterial food chains.
Refer to the case study below for an example of the importance of the detritovore food chain in bioactivation of certain toxicants.
The primary factors of persistance of a toxicant in the food chain is high degrees of lipophilicity and metabolic preservation of the toxic effects.

 Millipede
They are very clean creatures spending a great deal of time cleaning and polishing the various parts of their bodies, and have a special brush-like group of hairs on the 2nd or 3rd pair of legs which are used in cleaning the antennae.
Being detritovores, rotting wood & leaves form the main part of their diet, breaking down dead plant material into small pieces.
Bacteria and microfungi feed on detritovore faeces, so they are an important link in the recycling of organic matter in the soil.

yep nother stupid question about dirt - The Reef Tank
General Reef Discussion In this forum we discuss issues related to keeping marine and reef aquariums in a friendly flame-free environment.
I added a Detritovore kit last week but there is some dirt in my gravel and I can't suck it up.
As long as I dont disturb the sand bed there is no problem but it seems like there is a lot of crud in there.

I recently purchased the IPSF live sand activator kit and I am pleased (also got the reef worms package).
I also have purchsed the inland aquatics detritovore kit which is similar and I was also pleased with it.
Both IPSF and Inland can hook you up with some worms, mini stars, brittle stars, etc. to get your live sand bursting with life.

DECOMPOSERS: heterotrophic organisms (usually microscopic) that break down the complex organic compounds of dead plants or animals, thereby releasing simple substances that can be re-used by  autotrophic producer organisms.
DETRITUS ECOSYSTEM: an ecosystem in which detritovores play a major part.
As organic detritus accumulates in a given habitat, there is a temporary increase in carrying capacity for detritus consumers.

Obviously green algae are autotrophic producers, but are probably not responsible for most of the energy in these food chains.
Many of the consumers are detritovores, largely obtaining energy from leaf litter & other organic debris.
So in this instance, the PS producers are actually outside the community being observed.

It will be a desperate race to somehow rebalance the scales of biosolars vs detritovores to optimize the Dieoff Bottleneck.

We can probably best learn from ecosystems how to create a living economy by using models of ecosystem dynamics side-by-side with models of human systems.
For instance, develop a system model of the resource recovery industry and its technologies in parallel with models of the detritovore and decomposer subsystems of various ecosystems.
Learn from them as independent complex systems and let the ecosystem dynamics inspire new thoughts about the design of resource recovery, not necessarily imitation.

We are depleting resources magnitudes faster than Nature can replenish them because we are wildly overpopulated and genetically addicted to the vast leverage afforded by oil-powered machinery of every kind.
We are "detritovores": our lives are dependent upon burning the fossil fuel detritus of ancient sunshine accumulated over untold millions of years.
If Humans never adopted fire, then mechanical tools-- the world's population would never have exceeded 500 million-- because we did adopt the detritovore lifestyle, it allowed a 7 billion human overshoot.

Live Rock and live sand - The Reef Tank
I am going to a aquarium only store and I will look there.
Well Tyler, to be honest, I think the best live sand to use, hands down, is a handful of sand from a buddy's reef tank, a detritovore kit like one sold from IPSF, and some old fashioned patience.
As far as live rock goes, one of the recent weekly discussions was completely devoted to the subject.

Steady-State Economy: What It Is, Why We Need It
Worse, this development inflicted habitat damage and thereby reduced carrying capacity.
Once the fossil fuels were depleted, however, "the human niches based on burning that legacy would collapse, just as detritovore niches collapse when the detritus is exhausted." The human population bloom would likely be followed by a die-off.
To quantify our overshoot of the ecosystem's regenerative capacity, Mathis Wackernagel and other scientists measured the flows of resources and wastes into the biologically productive area needed to maintain these levels of resource extraction and waste absorption.
