To accomplish this goal, the State of Michigan purchased the portion of the Ann Arbor Railroad between Ann Arbor and Toledo in March 1976 and the remainder of the Ann Arbor Railroad, including the car ferries, in 1980.

Initially used for high-speed service between Detroit and Chicago it would have been relegated to lighter passenger duties and ultimately (at least judging by its condition) freight service.
It is intriguing that a freight railroad with minimal passenger service would acquire a virtually obsolete turn-of-the-century passenger locomotive, but the DT under Henry Ford's leadership had a reputation for rigorous and sometimes idiosyncratic maintenance and up-grading policies.
An extensive rebuild was undertaken at the Rouge Plant's Fordson shops that not only included a new firebox and the addition of superheating to the repaired boiler but also the addition of a cast aluminum chair for the engineer and nickel-plated appliances throughout.

The Royersville tunnel is about 5 miles to the north of this spot (as the crow flies), while the big Chessie yard at West Russell, KY lies about a mile and a half to the West.
The church is a prominent feature of this section of Ironton and is beautifully displayed on page 114 in the book, Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad In Color.

Several years ago, I wrote an article about the incident, but this last week, while I was at a museum conference in Detroit at The Henry Ford museum, I had an opportunity to spend half a day in the Benson Ford Research Center.

They were probably built for the Norfork and Western RR as Trostel indicates that the DT&I acquired them in 1977 through an equipment firm from the Norfolk Southern Railway.

As was the case of the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad Company Rouge Cutoff (built in the late 1920's), it was a late bloomer of the Detroit Railroad scene, created to ease congestion as well as to provide a company owned gateway to the region's fast-growing automotive business.
To gain access to the region PRR used the Pere Marquette Railroad from Alexis (near Toledo, OH) to Romulus, and the Wabash Railroad from Romulus to Delray.
The sum total Detroit area PRR properties were the north end of the PRR Toledo Division, which started at milepost 0.0 Toledo Junction (which was on the Fort Wayne Division just west of Mansfield, OH).
