The Michigan State University College of Law, established in 1891 as the Detroit College of Law, was the first law school in the Detroit, Michigan area and the second in the U.S. state of Michigan.
The college opened in 1892 with 69 students and was incorporated in 1893.
Although it operates as a constituent college of the university, the college of law remains financially independent and receives no state or university funding.

One approach, the reference tax law baseline, is to classify a provision as a tax expenditure if the classifying agency determines that the Congressional purpose for adopting that provision was to carry out some program that Congress wished to support.

Before the founding of the College, the only way in which a resident of the City of Detroit could become a member of the bar without leaving the city to study was by “reading” law in the offices of local attorneys.

A proposal introduced by MSU Provost Lou Anna Simon and passed by Academic Governance on Tuesday could solve that, changing the name of the law school to the Michigan State University College of Law.
In 2000, it became the MSU-Detroit College of Law, and in summer 2002, the college changed to the MSU-DCL College of Law.
Calling the institution the Michigan State University College of Law - on diplomas, on works of research, on name tags at conventions, on anything - is a win-win situation for both the university and the law college.

I go to Cooley, and DCL is kind of our rival, since we're across town, so I'm supposed to be really mean and say it's horrible.
My only criticism of DCL (and it's not a huge criticism) is that it's a private school on one of the largest state campuses in the country, so you get the best of both worlds: the high tuition of a private law school and the impersonal treatment of a large state school.
DCL's median gpa is around 156 this year, and they offer generous scholarships to try to attract the higher qualified students.
