Detroit Diesel Corp. plans to require blue-collar retirees to start paying as much as $834 a month in premiums for health insurance beginning in January, the latest sign that retired autoworkers are losing medical benefits they expected to last a lifetime.
Detroit Diesel spokeswoman Liane Bilicki said the union agreed to limit the company's liability for future retiree health benefits in a 1993 agreement with the company.
Detroit Diesel, a unit of DaimlerChrysler AG and a former General Motors Corp. subsidiary, is the latest Metro Detroit employer to shift more health care costs onto employees and retirees.
