Jack McDowell, sidelined 2 1/2 months with a sore elbow, pitched seven strong innings Wednesday night as the Anaheim Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0.
McDowell, on the DL twice this year because of his ailing elbow, rejoined the active roster last Saturday, but had to serve a four-day suspension for participating in the Angels-Royals brawl in Kansas City on June 2.

Baseball Prospectus Articles Prospectus Triple Play: Anaheim Angels, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers
At the time, Stoneman commented that he wished he had done less at the Winter Meetings, and that he wanted his 2003 club to be as similar to the 2002 squad as possible.
Never mind the fact that a large reason for the Angels' success in 2002 was that nearly every player on the roster performed slightly ahead of expectations.
All of this is relevant to the Angels, of course, when one considers the interview General Manager Bill Stoneman granted Rob Neyer back in March.

SI.com - Sports Illustrated -- The Magazine - Scorecard: The Unbearable Brightness of Beane - Wednesday June 25, 2003 09:48 AM
In December 2001, Beane sent third baseman Eric Hinske, last season's Rookie of the Year, to Toronto for closer Billy Koch; to obtain lefthander Ted Lilly in a three-way deal last July, Beane gave the Tigers righthander Jeremy Bonderman, first baseman Carlos Peña and righthander Franklyn German, all Detroit regulars.
In Beane's five seasons as G.M., the A's have gone 180-99 after the July 31 trade deadline (a.645 winning percentage and the best in baseball over that time) compared with 277-253 (.523) before it.
The roster of players Beane has added via July trades -- including outfielder Terrence Long and pitchers Kevin Appier and Jason Isringhausen in '99, outfielder Dye in '01 and second baseman Ray Durham in '02 -- is staggering, and goes a long way toward bolstering Lewis's representation of Beane as a shark swimming with guppies.
