One of the principal French regiments of foot in the attack from Dettingen was the Garde Francaise.

DETTINGEN, a village of Germany in the kingdom of Bavaria, on the Main, and on the Frankfort-on-Main-Aschaffenburg railway, 10 m.
It is memorable as the scene of a decisive battle on the 27th of June 1743, when the English, Hanoverians and Austrians (the "Pragmatic army"), 42,000 men under the command of George II.
It was in memory of this victory that Handel composed his Dettingen Te Deum.

On 27 June 1743 at Dettingen, Germany, the Combined Allied Armies, under the command of George II, were maneuvered by the French into a bottleneck, between the river and the hills, and blocked the French Army in a strong position.
Ligonier's Horse, or the Black Horse as it was sometimes known on account of the Regimental facing colour, was one of the 10 cavalry regiments at the battle of Dettingen 1743.
As a result of a failure in one of the flank regiments of the brigade, of which the enemy had taken advantage, Ligonier's Horse was surrounded and overpowered, and forced to fight their way back through the French, as the only means of preventing being totally cut off.

Yet that morning a French victory was probable as the Allied Army of 44,000, under King George II, withdrew along the East bank of the river Main, by the narrow plain under steep wooded hills, and into the trap sprung by General Noilles’s French Army of 70,000.
Dettingen was the last battle in which a British Monarch commanded the Army in person.

Handel's music celebrating the victory of the British army at Dettingen in 1743 cannot be described as either subtle or humane.
If given a performance that can pace the mixture of raw power and contemplation effectively, the Dettingen setting is infectiously vibrant in a live context.
Admittedly the Dettingen Te Deum does not come across so well on disc, and one cannot complain that it has been unjustly neglected - there have been several decent recordings, including a reasonably good account by Simon Preston with The English Concert (DG/Archiv 410 647-2).

The Dettingen Te Deum: To Thee Cherubim And Seraphim
It was written, like the much slighter Dettingen anthem, to celebrate the comic-opera victory of King George the second over a startled Franco-Bavarian army in 1743.
As a makeweight I am very pleased also to have the Dettingen anthem, not a masterpiece comparable with its great companion, but something that if I had been George II I would have thought myself lucky enough to have received as a tribute just on its own.
