  Deuteron
The fact the deuteron having an electric quadrupolar moment means that the distribution of its structure probability density goes off spherical symmetry which implies that the nuclear potential representative of the forces acting on the two nucleons has not a perfect spherical symmetry.
In short, from the orbital model the deuteron central deficiency of charge density derives straightforwardly from the proposed orbital structure of the neutron, considered formed by a core proton and a shell.
So, the deuteron central deficiency of charge density rises from the logical separation between the two core protons due to the mutual repulsion of their positive charge, while the negative wrapping shell keeps them bonded.

That means, roughly speaking, that each deuteron would have to be accelerated by an electrical field possessing a total potential of not less than one million volts, which is a considerable amount of energy.
Deuteron activation of iron-56 can also produce the radionuclides manganese-54 (half-life: 312 days) and cobalt-57 (half-life: 72 days.) But these would require levels of energy perhaps higher than required to generate most of the observed radionuclides.
The deuterons could not exert enough force to press the plants to the ground, for if they did, the plants would also be burned to a crisp.

 ENERGY SCIENCE REPORT No. 5
These are (a) that the deuteron exhibits a nuclear magnetic moment that is about 6/7ths of that expected in relation to its spin property and (b) that the proton exhibits properties suggesting it is composed of three charges, rather than a single charge.
The deuteron property implies that it has a state for one seventh of the time in which its positive charge becomes that of a satellite beta-plus particle that has been transiently displaced from the mass of its core, which thereby reacts as a neutral charge in its spin response during that limited transient period.
In this case, the deuteron would become a triton, whereas in the triton the proton infusion into the two-proton component destroys the beta particle nuclear chain and severs the link with the antiproton component, which thereby becomes involved in a decay which replenishes the virtual mu-meson population of the vacuum.

The Deuteron   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The deuteron, composed of a proton and a neutron, is a stable particle.
The stability of the deuteron is an important part of the story of the universe.
In the Big Bang model it is presumed that in early stages there were equal numbers of neutrons and protons since the available energies were much higher than the 0.78 MeV required to convert a proton and electron to a neutron.

NEW STRUCTURE MODELS OF HADRONS, NUCLEI AND MOLECULES PERMITTED BY HADRONIC MECHANICS, THEIR EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATIONS ...
As a result, when members of the deuteron structure, protons and electrons are not ordinary particles as known in the standard literature (that is, irreducible representations of the Poincare' group), and are instead isoprotons and isoelectrons (that is, irreducible isorepresentations of the Poincare'-Santilli isogroup (29)).
Recall also that the deuteron is in its ground state with null angular momentum in which case there is no orbital contribution to the total magnetic moment from the two protons.
As indicated in Section 1, the assumption that the deuteron is a bound state of a proton and a neutron permits no identification of the physical origin of the nuclear force.

Deuteron Contamination Study using Thermal Model   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
For protons, F(y) is a linear parameterization obtained from the data at 6 A GeV, while for deuterons, F(y) is used with twice the slope of the protons.
We are used to the idea that deuterons misidentified as protons come from rapidities that are further back in y relative to the real protons, and that is certainly true at lower Pt.
Assume for the moment that deuterons from the red band contaminate protons at the 20% level in the case of the y = 0.4 slice.

CERN Courier - Bochum breaks deuteron polar - IOP Publishing - article
A maximum deuteron polarization of 56% at 2.5 T is already being achieved with the target for the COMPASS experiment (NA58) at CERN, which was developed and produced at Bochum.
A further substantial increase of the deuteron polarization has been achieved in both D-butanol and D-propanediol, chemically doped with radicals of the trityl family (which was developed and delivered by Amersham Health, Malmö).
The resonances are separated by the so-called quadrupole splitting, which is a consequence of the interaction of the deuteron quadrupole moment with the lattice electrical field gradient at the site of the deuteron.

The tensor polarized deuteron target is prepared using the polarized atomic beam target facility of the COSY experiment #5 (phase 1).
The deuteron vector polarization can be adjusted to be zero in the atomic beam source, if this polarization is measured in the dump of the atomic beam source.
In this case the deuteron beam dump has to be replaced by an arrangement of two 6-pole magnets and at least two RF-transitions (principle of an "inverted" nuclear spinpreparation system of a ground-state atomic beam source).

A Simple Minded Look at the Deuteron
The deuteron is the lightest, nontrivial nucleus (where I am viewing the proton as the lightest nucleus).
The small binding energy would indicate that the deuteron is an extended object and that the details of the potential causing its formation are not really that relevant to its properties.
Further, as the deuteron is the only bound state of the NN system, it is going to be an S-state (neglecting the mixing of different L-states) as we know from quantum mechanics that the higher angular momentum states are at higher energy.

The Deuteron EDM Collaboration is investigating the possibility to search for and EDM on a charged particle by placing it in a storage ring and observing the precession of its spin due to the electric field induced by its motion (v x B).
To give the precession time to develop, we propose to incorporate a radial electric field into the ring to adjust the size of the orbit so that, for a given magnetic field, the orbit period and the spin precession period coincide.
For this, new measurements are required of the influence of spin on deuteron reactions and scattering from a carbon target.

Under ideal situations the deuteron is accelerated through the full fusor applied potential to collide head on with a like deuteron accelerated from the opposite side of the fusor.
For any deuteron at any energy (Ek- in electron volts), there is a specific velocity V. Therefore, relative to any given deuteron, it sees itself as being hit at 2V.
In better fusors of lower pressure, with confined deuteron production near the outer walls or with ion guns, the power losses fall and more and more deuterons have a chance to fuse, arriving at the central focus at fusion energy.

Measurement of five relaxation rates per deuteron in (13)C-labeled and fractionally (2)H-enriched proteins in solution.Very good agreement is obtained between calculated parameters describing the amplitudes and time scales of motion when different subsets of the relaxation data are employed.
Since values of the spectral density function at only three different frequencies contribute to the five relaxation rates, the self-consistency of the relaxation data is readily established.
All five deuterium relaxation rates have been measured for deuterons in the methyl groups of the B1 immunoglobulin binding domain of peptostreptococcal protein L and the N-terminal SH3 domain from the protein drk.

The Deuteron, and more about the Dynamical Symmetry Breaking
And this is what the deuteron really looks like in the so-called intrinsic reference frame.
The intrinsic wave function of the deuteron breaks the rotational symmetry, and breaks the isospin symmetry, i.e., a rotation in the real space, and a rotation in the iso-space, gives another wave function.
The deuteron wave function, with which we have begun this discussion, is a perfect example of such a situation.

The Size And The Shape Of The Deuteron   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
This experiment has gained new information on the shape and size of the deuteron, a nucleus consisting of a proton and a neutron.
While previous experiments have probed the size of the deuteron to only 0.5 Fermi, about half the size of a proton, this new experiment is the first to resolve details of the deuteron structure down to a fifth of the proton's size.
Surprisingly enough and contrary to some theoretical predictions, this experiment shows that even at this small scale the deuteron can still be described perfectly well by "classical" nuclear physics as a system of a proton and a neutron loosely held together, without considering the fundamental building blocks of the particles, namely quarks and gluons.

Cold Fusion Research: Models And Potential Benefits
Very high thermal energy prevents the Coulomb forces from deviating their trajectories under conditions of hot fusion, but in metal there is a high concentration of low-thermal-energy protons and electrons at a mean distance of about 2 Angstroms and when exposed to a transient electrical field the probability of the three-body collision increases.
Also the theory that deuterons (protons) exist in deep energy wells may not be valid because the protons appear to be mobile in a similar state as classical oscillators.
A deuteron in such a crystal is subject to forces from the crystal lattice, as well as the Coulomb force from another deuteron.

This neutron forms a deuteron by uniting with a proton.
The force causing this unification is the "strong nuclear force"; the force that converts a proton into a neutron on the other hand is a different one and is called the "weak nuclear force".
If the strong nuclear force were any stronger than it is, it would be able to fuse two protons to one another immediately and without having to wait ten minutes for a proton to be converted into a neutron.
