 Hanna Reitsch
Vom Juni desselben Jahres an arbeitete Hanna Reitsch als Testpilotin für die "Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Segelflug" in Darmstadt.
Für ihren Einsatz erhielt sie unter anderem das Eiserne Kreuz erster und zweiter Klasse (das EK I als einzige Frau in der deutschen Geschichte) und das "Goldene Militärfliegerabzeichen mit Diamanten".
Ab 1954 arbeitete sie erneut als Testpilotin in Darmstadt, diesmal bei der neu gegründeten Deutschen Versuchsanstalt für Luftfahrt (DVL).

Sailplane research was also nationalised under the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Segelflug (DFS - German Research Institute for Sailplane Flight).
In 1970, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first competition, the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum (German Sailplane Museum) was opened on the plateau, with Neil Armstrong a guest of honour at the ceremony.
Following the reunification of Germany and demise of the Soviet Union, the surveillance and radar installations were removed in the 1990s.
