The strange history of "der deutsche Michel"
Michel cartoons enjoyed an immense vogue in the Weimar Republic, in the Adenauer years and again at the time of the fall of the Wall and its aftermath.
The first pictorial representation of Michel in the early 1640s as a foolish fop, aping foreigners in dress and language, coincided with the early debate on the merits (or otherwise) of the German language by comparison with the languages of her neighbour.
Michel cartoons reflect this development with reference to Michel and Marianne, his French lover or wife (though the ‘love affair’ was not necessarily shared by their peoples).

In place of the usual personification of the continent of Europe, however, the national symbol — the “Deutscher Michel” — is used in conjunction with his attribute, the head of cabbage (Ill. 3).
The “Deutscher Michel” is conceived of here as the successor to the merchants of the Hanseatic League (Ill. 4), whose member cities comprised the port towns and commercial centres of nearly all the countries of Northern Europe.

France - Bindel, Rene and Helene, their son Jean, and Pava, Clotilde
When the war broke out, the father, Michel Deutscher, enlisted in a brigade of foreign volunteers and, in June 1940, was taken prisoner by the German army; his wife and nine-year-old son remained in occupied Paris.
With the increase in large roundups of Parisian Jews in July 1942, Claire Deutscher appealed for help to a French manufacturer who had business relations with her brother, and was turned away.
After the war, the Bindel and Deutscher families became close friends, and Michel Deutscher wrote the following in his testimony: “I would not be exaggerating to say that H é l è ne and Ren é substituted for the grandfather and grandmother who perished in the Holocaust.

 Ordre du Saint-Esprit History
To the category of military-monastic can also be added the Teutonic Knights (Deutscher Orden) and the Orders in Spain (Calatrava, Alcantara, Santiago, Montesa), which represented analogs of the crusading spirit deployed in the colonization of Eastern Europe or the Reconquista of Spain on the Muslims.
The national orders are orders of chivalry, usually restricted to the nobility, with limited membership and only one class, which sovereigns created in order to find new ways of binding to their person the loyalty of an aristocracy whose feudal allegiance was waning.
This cross of the Holy Spirit was defined in article 85 like " made in the form of that of Malta, very of gold, enamelled of white on the edges, and the medium without enamel " (actually enamelled green f1ammes).

Monthly Review December 2004 Notes from the Editors
This prize is given annually to a book that is said to exemplify “the best and most innovative new writing in or about the Marxist tradition.” The first edition of Beyond ‘Capital’ (1992), argued that Marx’s critique of political economy was left fundamentally unfinished.
Another leading contributor to Marxist thought and close friend of MR is István Mészáros, an earlier winner of the Deutscher prize for his book Marx’s Theory of Alienation (Merlin, 1970) and author of the magisterial critical treatise, Beyond Capital: Towards a Theory of Transition (Monthly Review Press, 1995).
Mészáros’s latest book, Socialism or Barbarism (Monthly Review Press, 2001), is a powerful treatment of the accelerating world crisis engendered by the U.S. attempt to utilize its massive war machine to reestablish and extend its hegemony over the world capitalist order.
