I may not be far off the mark when I say that the TSKK itself took a back seat in pushing forward the Roman script.
Though I know how to read Devanagiri, having studied both Hindi and Marathi at school, I was not keen on gettting it.
Some of those Devanagiri side have expressed their support, and this should hold good in the fight for equal status.

There has been a lot of argument over whether the various languages of northern India are actual languages or dialects...I don't know about that one, but they all use devanagiri script.
Urdu is similar, almost identical, to Hindi (with far more Persian words and fewer Sanskritic ones, however) and yet it uses the Arabic writing system and Hindi uses devanagiri.
But my students told me that since they learned in school that Mandarin and Cantonese were the same, that they must be the same.

Therefore, the Devanagiri script would be most suitable for this purpose.

Most linguists think they are essentially the same when spoken, the attempted distinctions being more political than linguistic.
Only Punjabi “speakers” managed to retain the distinctiveness of their language and got it included in the Schedule – and this was after intense and prolonged battles with Hindi promoters.
What helped them was their script (gurmukhi), which (like Urdu’s) is distinct from Devanagiri of Hindi.

Say, we changed Word's font to Devanagiri (Mangal) and input the Hindi unicode values into the keyboard stream then we input English characters from the keyboard and it works fine.
Now, if we change the font again to Devanagiri (Mangal) to input some devanagiri characters, the whole text's font becomes Devanagiri(Mangal) and the english characters that are displayed becomes unreadable.

DAUDI BOHRA ENGLISH AS SPOKEN IN SRI LANKA. Free term papers for college, book reports and research papers. Welcome to ...
Some of the Moghul family members were great patrons of poetry and music and slowly there developed a 'Hindustani' poetry, based on Hindustani language, which used words from Arabic and Persian and was written in Perso-Arabic script.
This not only resulted in the change of outlook in the younger generation but also resulted in that populace using English instead of their mother tongue Dawath-ni-zabaan a dialect of Gujarathi which instead of Devanagiri script used a Perso-Arabic script that is similar to Urdu in their homes.
What this meant for Daudi Bohra English as spoken in Sri Lanka is that their version of Sri Lankan English became infused with words from Hindi, Urdu, Gujarathi and Dawath-ni-zabaan, which also relies heavily on Arabic and Persian as well as the local languages of Sinhala and Tamil.

This is true of most tamil spoken by most people all over TN, some heavily sanskritised and some less intense.
When comparing tamil with the devanagiri based languages, the usual point that tamil does not have individual letters for the sounds ka, kha, ga and gha or sa,cha, chha,ja,jha as in devanagiri languages or even in Kannada and Telugu (dunno abt Malayalam)that have these mainly to accomodate the sanskrit in it.
I think we ever use the "gha", jha" at all in spoken tamil even today which I dont think is a huge handicap in a language.
