DEVENTER, a town in the province of Overysel, Holland, on the right bank of the Ysel, at the confluence of the Schipbeek, and a junction station Io m.
Deventer is a neat and prosperous town situated in the midst of prettily wooded environs, and containing many curious old buildings.
In the 14th century Deventer was the centre of the famous religious and educational movement associated with the name of Gerhard Groot, who was a native of the town (see Brothers Of Common Life).

Deventer is a municipality and city in the Salland region of the Dutch province of Overijssel.
Deventer was probably founded by the English missionary Lebuinus around 768, who built a wooden church on the border of the IJssel.
Deventer is the place of birth of Geert Groote and home to his Brethren of the Common Life, a school of religious thought that was of great influence on Thomas a Kempis and Erasmus in later times.

Het is mogelijk dat Deventer zijn naam dankt aan het stadje Daventry in Engeland, waar Lebuïnus vandaan zou zijn gekomen, of naar een met hem meegereisde vriend met de naam Davo.
In Deventer werd deze bloem daarom Pothoofdplant genoemd.

Ironically Van Deventer, leading the British 2nd East African Division (and later the East African Expeditionary Force) first in South West African (1914-15) and then in German East Africa (1917-18), found himself confronting a guerrilla force led by the remarkable German commander Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck.
Van Deventer did succeed in pushing Lettow-Vorbeck out of German East Africa but never actually defeated him (the latter only surrendering some two weeks after the official armistice of 11 November 1918 having belatedly received the news from a captured British prisoner).
