Topic: Device file

Device file - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A device file or special file is an interface for a device driver that appears in a file system as if it were an ordinary file.
Finally, device files are useful for accessing system resources that have no connection with any actual device such as data sinks and random number generators.
This means that certain file names are reserved for device files, and cannot be used to name new files or directories.

Character Device Files   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The original purpose of device files is to allow processes to communicate with device drivers in the kernel, and through them with physical devices (modems, terminals, etc.).
The device driver proper is composed of the four device_ functions, which are called when somebody tries to do something with a device file which has our major number.
The reason is that if the device file is opened by a process and then we remove the kernel module, using the file would cause a call to the memory location where the appropriate function (read/write) used to be.

If this file system is used, management of device files is simplified and quite different; on the other hand, the new filesystem brings several user-visible incompatibilities, and as we are writing it has not yet been chosen as a default feature by system distributors.
The disadvantage of dynamic assignment is that you can't create the device nodes in advance because the major number assigned to your module can't be guaranteed to always be the same.
Though this is always the first operation performed on the device file, the driver is not required to declare a corresponding method.

Loop device primer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Loop devices are block devices that do not store any data directly but loop all reads and writes to underlying block device or file, possibly encrypting and decrypting data in the process.
All devices are identical, and each can be tied to one real block device or one file on some file system.
Device backed loop device can be used with journaling file systems as device backed loops guarantee that writes reach disk platters in order required by journaling file system (write caching must be disabled on the disk drive, of course).

In other words, you have device files for devices you don't have.
Imagine having to change the permissions of all device files that have a corresponding device in your system, and leaving the rest of the device files as they are.
The fourth field is the ownership of the device file, and the fifth field contains the permissions of the device file.

Linux Device Drivers, 2nd Edition: Chapter 5: Enhanced Char Driver Operations   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Access to a device is controlled by the permissions on the device file(s), and the driver is not normally involved in permissions checking.
The drawback of controlling by printing is that it adds policy constraints to the device; for example, it is viable only if you are sure that the control sequence can't appear in the data being written to the device during normal operation.
When the device isn't accessible, returning an error is usually the most sensible approach, but there are situations in which you'd prefer to wait for the device.

 Devfs (Device File System) FAQ
For miscellaneous character devices a second step is required: there is a scan for the driver entry with the same minor number as the file that was opened, and the appropriate minor open method is called.
The devfs solution allows a device driver to "tag" certain device files so that when an unopened device is opened, the ownerships are changed to the current euid and egid of the opening process, and the protections are changed to the default registered by the driver.

The device pseudo file system (devfs) was added to the Linux development source tree in 2.3.46 and will be present in the forthcoming 2.4 series of kernels.
It also shows a hole in the device mapping as /dev/sg2 (char major 21, minor 2) is no longer associated with a device.
Using the default "conf" file supplied with the devfsd tarball yields the scsi device names we are used to in Linux.

Also, its name is a bit misleading; it represents an abstract open `file', not a file on a disk, which is represented by a structure named inode.
The downside is that you can't make a device file in advance, since you don't know what the major number will be.
If the device file is opened by a process and then we remove the kernel module, using the file would cause a call to the memory location where the appropriate function (read/write) used to be.
