The first time I saw Devin Townsend was at Jannus Landing in 1994.
He was a hyperactive, skinny, dorky-looking, half-grown-in mohawk wearing kid with vocal abilities ranging from a deep, thunderous, Armageddonous growl, to beautifully open and operatic, to a familiar shriek that would make Ripley wet her pants (all within 3 seconds).

Physicist is basically the SYL lineup of Townsend, bassist Byron Stroud, guitarist Jed Simon, and Hoglan on drums.
With Devin on keys and guitar, there is a light, high-pitched synthetic aura behind each song that enhances Devin's familiar screams, most noticeable on the appropriate opener, "Namaste", a song about how Devin is tired of the meaningless, clichéd words that so many songwriters use today.
Devin has stated before that he aimed for a more "pop" type sound for Physicist, and while I don't think N-Sync's position on Billboard's Hot 100 is threatened, the sound simply works for Physicist.

Yes, Townsend provides downtuned guitar and chugging guitar, but he also provides a lot of gloss and brightness--the sort of gloss and brightness that ‘70s and ‘80s arena rockers brought to the studio.
The fact that Townsend's credits includes Steve Vai and Front Line Assembly tells you how far-reaching and eclectic he is, and it also explains how he manages to make a blend of ‘70s/'80s arena rock/pop-metal and ‘90s/2000s alterna-rock sound so logical and coherent on this excellent CD.
