He contacted Devin in 1999 and asked him to be a part of the 2001 album on the track "Fuck You." This single appearance made Devin a hot commodity, earning him appearances on songs with De La Soul, Raphael Saadiq, veteran rap group UGK, and a solo track on the Oz soundtrack.

Devin The Dude - To Tha X-Treme - Review - Stylus Magazine
Devin’s singsong delivery is the key to this album’s success; his voice is musical and floats sublimely over the beat, riding gently above the groove.
Lyrically, Devin fits right in with the idiosyncratic and lighthearted rapping of an MC like De La Soul’s Posdnous, although Devin’s music is more rooted in his own day-to-day experiences—relationships, hanging out with friends, and, in particular, smoking weed.
Devin’s inspired moments are numerous; in particular, his languorous take on the parable of Brier Rabbit, “The Briar Patch”, which certainly sounds as if it was conceived in a cloud of weed smoke.

The Guide -- Devin the Dude Is ‘Just Tryin’ Ta Live’
Devin the Dude, a Houston native, is one of those artists who, after months on “F — You” off of Dr. Dre’s 2001 LP, never made it onto the mainstream of hip-hop’s radar.
Luckily, Devin then returns to his usual laid-back sound on the aptly titled “R&B.” Set as a debate between a redneck and Devin, with Devin playing both parts, “R&B” has little to do with rhythm and blues, but instead with the chorus, which has Devin singing “reefer and beer” in a soft voice.
But the greatness of Devin’s latest effort is not in his continual use of sexual and alcoholic subject matter, but in the chances he takes by moving toward different, more innovative topics.

Though Devin is growing towards producing more “serious” music, it has been his carefree nature that has lauded him a rare respect from fellow artists that has led to coveted cameo appearances on projects by Scarface, Dr. Dre, The Roots, De La Soul and even the ill-fated Jay-Z/R. Kelly Best of Both Worlds album.
Devin’s popularity among his peers has also caused many out-of-the-loop music listeners to ask: “What record label is he on?” The answer is Rap-A-Lot, the legendary Houston-based record label that is responsible for iconoclastic acts such as the Geto Boys.
