2000 AD Review - Devlin Waugh: A Darker Shade of Purple Pt 1
POV moves to behind Devlin's back as he holds a strand of the cord holding the smock on with his right hand so that he's pulling it and thus undoing the knot that holds it up while his left hand holds the knot itself.
DEVLIN is sitting as we first see him in SWIMMING IN BLOOD, sitting cross-legged in his standard tank top and trousers, with the Eye of Sekhmet present around his neck and the filtered cigarette between his lips; the earlier crimson paint stains have been washed off.
DEVLIN is placing his cup down on the table, now that the POV has shifted around his back is to us so that we cannot see his facial expressions.

2000 AD Review - Devlin Waugh - Swimming in Blood
Waugh takes a backseat supporting role in this first adventure, and often spends time hindering the overall flow of the story (stopping for a "spot of tea" for example).
As opposed to being a Devlin Waugh tale outright, this is a Dredd starred offering, with only a guest appearance from Waugh over half-way through.
With a narration from the man himself, the tale is imbued with that sense of 19th century fiction storytelling, where we are reading the memoir of Waugh as opposed to being more of a bystander.

 Devlin Waugh
Devlin followed Rodovore around for a while, watching him try out the games, find one be liked, then sat at the bar as Rodovore settled down to play baccarat.
Devlin ordered a brandy smash and sipped it slowly, keeping his eyes on Rodovore but letting his mind wander, seeing them in situations together, or wrestling maybe, or a bout of fisticuffs down by the swimming pool.
Devlin took hold of her arm and pulled her quickly behind him, already wondering how he was going to play this.

But a new large-scale threat to the world is raising its head, and this time, Devlin Waugh won't be able to stay out of it, sheltered by fine wine and willing boys.
Even more than in the first volume, Waugh's gayness is made perfectly clear, as the character is still played as a dandy with teeth (pun intended).

Commentary: For those who've come late to the character, Devlin Waugh is an adventurer in the Judge Dredd universe.
The second DC collection of Devlin Waugh devotes most of its page count to a mammoth epic called "Sirius Rising," a tour-de-force which ran through three separately-titled stories over 25 weeks in 1999.
The character has appeared in one further Dredd crossover (the first two are in Swimming in Blood, the first volume) and one single-episode story in the last twelve months, but while more stories are planned, it will probably take quite some time to build up the page count for another DC edition.

Created by John Smith and Sean Phillips, who also created the series New Statesmen (also gay-friendly), this is the story of the eponymous character Devlin Waugh, a paranormal investigator for the Vatican -but a future Vatican, set in the Dredd world.
Or if you prefer, he's a steroid freak, an occultist with a big gun, and he's a flaming queen, obsessed with decadent beauty and boys.
The wonderful thing is the way the rather grisly story (the first one is that of a submarine jail invaded by vampires, and it goes rather badly for Waugh) is blended with Waugh's detachement, ennui and very camp humor (or, what if La Cage Aux Folles had been mixed with The Terminator?).

They also have some guides to the religious influences of some comic creators but the pages of some CoW favourites Grant Morrison and Alan Moore are a little thin considering they are the one's to make most explicit use of the medium for their own, magic(k)al, purposes.
It is also a pity that British comic characters are ignored - just thinking about 2000AD we have explicitly (Catholic) religious figures like Devlin Waugh and Canon Fodder.
Anyway plenty to ponder on there and I'll be keeping an eye open for this kind of angle in the future.
