Topic: Devon Island

Field Reports | NASA Haughton-Mars Project
Devon Island is the largest uninhabited island on Earth, with a surface area of approximately 66,800 km2.
The coastal areas of the island present steep sea cliffs and deep glacial trough valleys and fjords, many of which were likely last occupied by ice during the Last Glacial Maximum which ended approximately 10,000 to 8,000 years ago.
The rest of Devon Island presents a barren rocky surface incised by sinuous glacial trough valleys, dendritic meltwater channel networks, and clusters of small lakes.

Other islands in the archipelago are Banks Island, Prince of Wales Island, Devon Island, Prince Patrick Island, Melville Island, Sverdrup Island, Axel Heiberg Island, Southampton Island, Somerset Island and King William Island.
The group of islands is bounded on the west by the Beaufort Sea, on the north by the Arctic Sea, on the east by Greenland, Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, and on the south by Hudson Bay and the mainland of Canada.
In addition, Canada claims the water between the Arctic Islands as internal waters, a claim that is not recognized by the United States, and which has caused some conflict with respect to the enforcement of environmental laws.

Arthur C. Clarke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He has long been an avid scuba diver and a member of the Underwater Explorers Club, and this tropical island allowed him to visit the ocean year-round.
The first manned mission to the moon (Prelude to Space), the colonization of Mars (The Sands of Mars) and life aboard a space station (Islands in the Sky) were all genre SF mainstays.
Clarke's background as a technical writer showed in the early novels as a deliberate documentary style, and his characters reflect Clarke's experience by being mostly military or civil service types.

On Devon Island, Rice and co-investigator Pascal Lee, a researcher at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, and a planetary scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center, studied what are called "active-layer-detachment slides."
The island shows evidence that the thawed ice first builds-up behind an ice barrier, then bursts the dam and slides downhill in the form of a muddy slush.

One terrestrial environment that may be an analog is the Houghton crater at Devon Island located high in the Canadian Arctic.
The crater lies near the northern shore of the island where the geologic province is the Arctic Platform made up of marine sedimentary rocks.
It is easy to argue that if life (or evidence for relic life) is to be found on Mars, it would very likely be in the depths of this breccia.
