The constituency is dominated by Luton airport and the Vauxhall car plant, and it came as a major blow to the area when Vauxhall announced that they plan to close their plant by mid 2002 with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
The constituency is part of the Neath and Port Talbot local authority area, which voted Yes in the 1997 referendum by a majority of 18,267, which was 66% of the vote in that area - the biggest single Yes percentage in Wales.
A very middle class constituency, it has the fifth highest proportion of non manual workers in the country (78.9% of its workforce) and over a third of its adult population possess higher educational qualifications, compared with a national average of 13% (according to the 1991 census).

Mr Burnett argued for the retention in that constituency of the Buckland Monachorum ward.
The new Devonport constituency which the Conservatives propose would curve from the south-west edge of the city around the top of Eggbuckland to include the Moor View ward which would be virtually isolated from the rest.
It may be that other things flow from boundaries of parliamentary constituencies and it may be that some of them may not be realistic prospects but nevertheless it is evidence and legitimate evidence by itself of ties that people in their own minds feel will be broken by those solutions.

However, the aspiration to retain the name “Plymouth Devonport” for one of the city’s constituencies is not a reason to breach the natural and community boundaries that the current plan reflects in the overall context of achieving balance, particularly as it causes more movement for more people.
I was elected to the constituency in 1992.
I have had constituents responding to me through my website and there were many people who were attracted to the idea of either Tamarside or Moor View as the name of the constituency, Moor View of course reflecting exactly what you have from the north of the constituency.

Constituents and party activists appreciated his presence in Plymouth and his well known support for Plymouth Argyle, where he was often recognised on the terraces, was popular with constituents.
He had his constituents" support for socialist reconstruction but he lost the support of his constituents, because of his socialist beliefs on disarmament, and this was a key factor in his loss of the 1955 election.

His father was Isaac Foot who was a solicitor and founder of the Plymouth law firm, Foot and Bowden.

It has been suggested that Foot's pacifist stance led many of the dockyard workers who made up a significant percentage of his constituency to abandon him.

Plymouth Devonport (UK Parliament constituency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plymouth, Devonport is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
The constituency was created in 1832, and elected two members until 1918, when the number was reduced to one.
This constituency underwent boundary changes between the 1992 and 1997 general elections and thus change in share of vote is based on a notional calculation.

The staggering overspend is set to reignite the controversial decision to award the contract to the Devonport dockyard in Plymouth, rather than give it to the Rosyth shipyard in Chancellor Gordon Brown's Dunfermline constituency.
The original estimate, when the contract was won by Devonport Management in 1993, was thought to be in the region of £240m.

Michael Foot went on to become the first Labour MP for Devonport in 1945, successfully defending the seat against Randolph Churchill in 1950 and 1951.
Although there may be an element of truth in this it should be remembered that the constituency of Devonport was always traditionally a marginal at best.
In fact Foot was dedicated to the workers of the dockyard and spent much of his energies in supporting the workers in improving their pay and conditions and would clearly not have seen the route to peace in arbitarily closing the industries that relied on the military in various forms.

It just so happens that some 10 years ago, two dockyards put in a bid for maintaining Trident submarines; the contract was a multi-million pound one, and Rosyth was already doing the work.
So the Tories put a contract to Devonport, to save £8 million, and it is costing £300 million; sounds like the same type of arithmetic they used for the privatisation of thw railways.
The link is this; the Tory government in Westminster put a contract to Devonport for political purposes, and not only did Scotland lose 10,000 jobs, we are also having to pay our share of the overspend.
