  Labrador Net - Dewclaw Removal
A practical reason to remove dewclaws, particularly in the hind feet, is to prevent trauma and tearing of the dangling digit.
Dewclaw removal is usually a minor procedure in newborn puppies.
If there is a choice, it is preferable to remove dewclaws in a litter of puppies when they are less than a few days old, as the procedure is more involved in an older dog.

 Dewclaw Removal - PetPlace.com
Dewclaw removal is most often performed in puppies around 2-5 days of age to comply with specific breed standards or to prevent the loosely attached dewclaw from catching on furniture, carpet, etc. resulting in damage to the toe.
Dewclaw removal may also be performed in older dogs if the toe becomes injured or damaged.
Dewclaw removal is most often performed in puppies at 2 to 5 days of age.

Dewclaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is some debate about whether the dewclaw helps dogs to gain traction when they run because, in some dogs, the dewclaw makes contact when they are running and the nail on the dewclaw often wears down in the same way that the toenails on their other toes do, from friction with running surfaces.
In some countries, however, removing the dewclaws is illegal, the argument being that the dewclaw will rarely or never suffer injury leading to amputation and that removing it is unnecessarily painful to the dog.
In addition, for those dogs whose dewclaws make contact with the ground when they run, it is possible that removing them could be a disadvantage for a dog's speed in running and changing of direction, particularly in performance dog sports such as dog agility.

 Road King magazine for truckers
However, because polydactility-having more than one dewclaw per leg-is common to breeds that traditionally climb a lot of mountains, herd a lot of sheep, or spend a lot of time in the snow, the supposition is that in the past the toes helped working dogs keep their balance and grip over uneven surfaces.
Some other breeds, like the Rottweiler, may or may not have dewclaws, and other breeds still, like the Weimaranar, can have no dewclaws at all; their dewclaws must be removed to compete in AKC shows.
Vets use sterile scissors to remove dewclaws, while at-home removals may rely on scissors or teeth-people's teeth, that is. Puppies are said not to mind having their dewclaws bitten off any more than having them snipped, but for the people it's an acquired taste.

A dewclaw is an incompletely developed toe in a dog, usually the first digit of the foreleg, although it can also be found on the rear leg.
Rear dewclaws are absent in most dogs, although single and double dewclaws are normal in some breeds such as the Great Pyrenees and briard.
Dewclaws are best removed (amputated) at 3 to 5 days of age, because no anesthesia is given at this young age.

 another look at dewclaws
These vets concluded that dewclaws are undeveloped and serve no purpose, and on the basis of this erroneous premise, they advocate removal.
I’m not going to play the purist here and now, as I usually do, to insist that the word “dewclaw” should only be applied to the first digit on the REAR limb when it exists, and that the one corresponding to a thumb should simply be called a “first digit”.
The typical practice is to tie a very tight knot around it, as close to the body as possible, and on as young a dog as possible, and as the pup grows the stricture will become relatively tighter.

If the dewclaw bothers them and they are bored them, they will sit for hours licking it.
