Topic: Dewey Redman

Dewey Redman | Obituaries | Guardian Unlimited
Dewey Redman, who has died of liver failure at the age of 75 was a bulky, grizzled saxophonist from Forth Worth, Texas, who sustained an insider's reputation across three decades for incisively independent contributions to some of the best work of Ornette Coleman and Keith Jarrett.
Redman began playing the clarinet in a church band at the age of 13, and was in a high-school marching band with Coleman later in his teens.
Redman was by now adding a sometimes spine-tingling dimension to the tenor sax by simultaneously singing and blowing through it, and his interest in glissandos, bent-pitches and ambiguous middle eastern tonalities was also expressed in his use of the oboe-like double-reed musette.
