The Dewey Square Tunnel in Boston, Massachusetts, is part of Interstate 93, running under the heart of the city's financial district, including Dewey Square.
Known to locals as the South Station Tunnel (due to its proximity to the city's main train station), the Dewey Square Tunnel is of cut-and-cover design, and originally was six lanes wide (three in each direction), with no breakdown lanes.
The tunnel was rehabilitated and now serves as exclusive southbound lanes of I-93, complete with a new ventilation system and gently sloped curves (like the curves on the corners of a race track).

The reason for the temporary detour is that the Dewey Square tunnel, built in 1959 after officials decided to bury the Central Artery through Chinatown, is being readied for reuse.
The tunnel has to be gutted and brought up to modern highway standards, which call for gentler curves and a slight, racetrack-like banking in the roadway to accommodate higher speeds.

The new Central Artery (the first section, from the Mystic bridge to North Street and the Sumner Tunnel, opened in October 1954) was ugly, it was a barrier between neighborhoods, and the land underneath wasn't terribly useful, with traffic flow confusing and inefficient.
The DPW decided to sink the remainder of the highway into a tunnel from Congress to Kneeland Streets, which came to be called the Dewey Square or South Station tunnel.
Planners decided to put the southern portion from the Fort Hill neighborhood past Congress Street and Dewey Square to Kneeland Street in a tunnel, because they realized that the elevated portion of the highway was too obtrusive and disruptive in the midst of downtown life.

On Sunday, April 4, 2004, the Central Artery Tunnel Project also know as The Big Dig, completed one of its last and most complex traffic shifts.
The Dewey Square Tunnel I90 Collector was opened to traffic and will temporarily handle all of the artery's south bound traffic.
The traffic shift will allow the remaining portion of the Dewey Square Tunnel to be renovated to accommodate a total of five south bound lanes of traffic.
