The German Wind Energy Institute (DEWI) was founded in 1990 in Wilhelmshaven by the Federal State of Lower Saxony for the purpose of supporting the wind energy industry.
Since then the institute has accompanied the rapid development of wind energy in all fields, in basic research, development of measuring methods, political decision-making and in numerous tasks and services connected with the realisation of wind farms.
DEWI's expansion into the international market has led to a rapid growth of the institute since 1998.

In Celtic mythology, Dewi was an ancient god, worshipped primarily in Wales.
Dewi in this context is an early Welsh equivalent of the name David (coming from Latin Davidus via Dewydd), although the now more usual Welsh form of David is Dafydd (also from Davidus).
The saint's name Dewi appears in various Welsh place names – most notably the town Tŷddewi (literally "house of Dewi", though the English name is St David's), and also in various place names containing Llanddewi ("church of Dewi").

 Dewi - Sant (St. David)
Dewi's early education was at a small Celtic monastery at Henfynyw, south of present day Aberaeron, and was completed at Llanddeusant under Paulinus (whose sight Dewi is said to have restored, one of many miracles attributed to him during his lifetime).
Dewi established a monastery in the area where St David's is now, using it as the hub of a network of monasteries he was to establish in west Wales during the sixth century.
Dewi was buried on the site of the present St David's cathedral (built in 1188) though whether his remains are still preserved in the reliquary behind the main altar must be open to serious doubt.Dewi's reputation grew during the Middle Ages.
