Dextroamphetamine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dextroamphetamine (also known as dextroamphetamine sulfate, dexamphetamine, dexedrine, Dexampex, Ferndex, Oxydess II, Robese, Spancap #1, and, informally, Dex), a stereoisomer of amphetamine, is an indirect-acting stimulant that releases norepinephrine from nerve terminals, thus promoting nerve impulse transmission.
Certain studies have been performed regarding possible alternate use for antidepressant treatment for HIV patients with depression and debilitating fatigue, early stage physiotherapy for severe stroke victims and treatment for those with methamphetamine (speed) addiction.
Possible adverse effects of dexamphetamine include insomnia, reduced appetite, dependence, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, and euphoria that may be followed by fatigue and depression.

 Data Sheet
Dexamphetamine, the dextrorotatory isomer of amphetamine, is an indirect-acting sympathomimetic amine with central stimulant and anorectic activity.
Dexamphetamine sulphate is readily absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and rapidly distributed into most of the body tissues with high concentrations in the brain and CSF.
The side-effects of dexamphetamine are commonly symptoms of overstimulation of the central nervous system and include insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, and euphoria that may be followed by fatigue and depression.

One patient on dexamphetamine discontinued the trial because of an event possibly related to the medication.

The biphasic nature of the response is seen in humans as well, and the commonly used clinical dose of dexamphetamine (0.2 to 0.6 mg Kg-1) is in the same range as that in the hypolocomotor animal model.
Methylphenidate and dexamphetamine, like cocaine, block the dopamine transporter leading to an increase in dopamine in the synaptic cleft, and dexamphetamine additionally has a direct dopamine releasing action [20].
Dexamphetamine typically takes 2-3 hours to reach peak concentration after a single oral dose [48], but its half-life (approximately 7 hours) is considerably longer than that of methylphenidate.

The centrally acting psychostimulant drugs methylphenidate and dexamphetamine are the preferred pharmacotherapies for ADHD in children in North America,1 the United Kingdom2 and Australia.
The aims of this study are to compare trends from 1994 to 2000 in the rates of consumption of dexamphetamine and methylphenidate in Australia with nine other developed countries, and to compare the rates of their consumption between Australia's jurisdictions (States and Territories) from 1984 to 2000.
Annual data from 1984 to 2000 on dexamphetamine sulfate 5 mg tablets and methylphenidate 10 mg tablets were obtained from the TMU and standardised to defined daily doses (DDDs) per 1000 population per day using interpolations of end-year national and Australian jurisdictional populations.

Medication for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): and analysis by Federal Electorate (200103)
Although the use of medication for the treatment of ADHD continues to be controversial in the public arena, the safety and efficacy, particularly in the short term, of psycho-stimulants such as dexamphetamine sulfate and Ritalin is well established.
Broadly speaking, some witnesses have argued that higher prescription rates for dexamphetamine sulfate in Western Australia are a result of misdiagnosis and/or over-prescription, while others have argued that there is no evidence to suggest that the rates are anything other than appropriate.
Evidence such as this would appear to indicate the higher rates of prescription of dexamphetamine sulfate in Western Australia may not simply be a result of the (often-claimed) better understanding of ADHD among practitioners in that State.

Dexamphetamine and methylphenidate (Ritalin¨) act on dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmitter pathways and appear to influence mainly prefrontal, frontal and limbic systems with benefits on disruptive behavioural inhibition, impulse control, selective attention, active working memory and executive functioning.
The majority of studies evaluate methylphenidate, as dexamphetamine is much less used in the United States where prescribing and manufacturing are more restricted and associations with Îstreet speedâ and other substance abuse are strong.
Dexamphetamine may theoretically predispose to slightly more noticeable side-effects as confirmed in an Australian crossover study of the two stimulants.

As methylphenidate and dexamphetamine are the exclusive treatment options in about 90 per cent of all cases of ADHD, this bulletin will refer to these stimulants or their compounds only.
While there may be an oversupply of methylphenidate and dexamphetamine and the potential to abuse these drugs is evident, a problem as extreme as the current amphetamine market would probably not develop.
Although there is still the potential for methylphenidate and dexamphetamine to become the entry-level drugs for a much larger stimulant abuse problem, the CMC considers that the illicit diversion and abuse of ADHD prescription drugs currently poses a low crime risk to the Queensland public.

It should be stressed also that while dexamphetamine sulfate represents the majority (72 per cent) of prescriptions for the treatment of ADHD, it is not the only such drug.
An analysis of PBS data for 1999-2000 indicates that the number of prescriptions dispensed for dexamphetamine sulfate was highest in Western Australia and lowest in the Northern Territory.
If this is the case, the one conclusion that does appear to be sustainable is that the interests of Australia's children and their families are unlikely to be well served by such variation between electorates.
