Dez Cadena Biography - AOL Music
Dez Cadena was the third in a line of four singers who fronted Black Flag.
The son of renowned producer and A&R man Ozzie Cadena (who worked with a multitude of jazz artists from the 1940s through 1960s -- Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, etc.), Dez was first friends with the members of Black Flag before becoming a member himself.
With Cadena wanting to focus more on guitar playing than singing, he handed the mic over to Rollins in late 1981 and moved over to rhythm guitar, playing on the group's debut full-length, Damaged.

Dez and I already had a date for a visit at my place, and when he came up (as always) the first thing we did was reach for guitars.
Dez, Rob and I used to do some jamming together in 1984, so it was very comfortable for me. I also met Bill Bowman, who has gone on to become one of the truest friends I have.
Dez also wanted to pull back from singing (which I was very VERY much against, I LOVE the way Dez sings from the heart) and unbeknownst to me had asked another guy named Rick (Rico) Snyder to perform lead singing duties.

 Vida - Dc3 - Music Reviews
Though Dez Cadena will probably always be best known as an early member of Black Flag, his work with DC3 explored much more interesting musical territory.
The band was much more than just a vehicle for Cadena, as the splendid musical interplay and strong keyboard work make it clear that this was a partnership.
Cadena's vocals are strong and steady through most the album, Paul Roessler's rather less so, but Vida is still very good and consistent for a collection of live recordings.

Bio: A member of the first edition of Black Flag circa 1981-1982, guitarist Dez Cadena moved on after the band temporarily broke up in 1983 due to contract squabbles with Unicorn/MCA.
By 1984, he had recruited two veterans of the L.A. hardcore scene (Paul Roessler and Jeff Dahl) to form DC3, a band which pointed back to the roots of hardcore by reworking the sludge metal of Black Sabbath with little punk influence.
A year later, Roessler became Twisted Roots for a self-titled LP which featured Cadena and Dahl but functioned more as a solo album.

After the release of Jealous Again, Pederast left the group and was replaced by Dez Cadena.
However, Cadena preferred to play guitar, and his transition to that instrument in 1981 gave the group a heavier sound; his replacement on vocals was Henry Rollins, a Washington, D.C., fan who jumped on-stage to sing with the band during a New York performance.
During that time, the group continued to tour, and surreptitiously released Everything Went Black, a double-album retrospective that contained no mention of the band, although it listed the names of the members on the front cover.

 Black Flag ~ part II
When original Black Flag singer Keith Morris quit the band in '79, he was quickly replaced by Ron Reyes, a Hermosa Beach teenager who had been following the band since it was called Panic and knew all of the songs.
Five months after Reyes quit the band midshow, in '80, he was replaced by his 19-year-old friend (and longtime Flag fan), guitarist Dez Cadena.
Then, in late summer of '81, Cadena — whose voice was faltering, and who was more interested in playing guitar, anyway — was replaced on lead vocals by 20-year-old Washington, D.C., Flag fanatic Henry Rollins.
