There are of course bigger, more developed cities in the eastern Tarai, but Nepal is after all a hill country run by hill people, and so the job of administering the region must fall to a hill town.
This political promotion, and the road that came with it, has decisively shifted Dhankuta's economic base from trade to bureaucracy: bypassed by the road, the bazaar has lost much of its commercial importance, while a whole new suburb of government and aid agency offices has sprung up along the road above town.
The Dhankuta Museum (daily except Sat, 10am-5pm; Rs10), located near the top of the bazaar, displays ethnic and archeological artefacts of eastern Nepal.

Call it development or call it colonialism by another name, but the big donor nations have staked out distinct spheres of influence in Nepal, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the British bailiwick around Dhankuta.
Britain's interest in this area has not been without ulterior motives: roughly half the recruits for the Gurkha regiments have traditionally come from the eastern hills, and the biggest Gurkha training camp was, until 1989, in Dharan.
Constructed with £50 million of British taxpayers' money, it's almost absurdly luxurious for a hill region with minimal traffic, though in fairness it must be seen in the context of the entire integrated development programme.
