Dhanushkodi was a city at the southern tip of the Rameswaram island, at the eastern coast of the Tamil Nadu state of India.
It was the closest point on the Indian coast to Sri Lanka, until it was washed away in 1964 in a devastating cyclone.
A.P.J. Abdul Kalam the current President of India was born in Dhanushkodi.

Dhanushkodi, at the eastern end of the island, is located 8 kms away from Rameswaram.
This is the place where Rama is said to have bathed, and the boulders that pepper the sea between here and Srilanka, known as Adam's bridge, were the stepping stones used by Hanuman to find Rama's wife Sita, after she was abducted by Ravana, the King of Lanka.

I keep thinking about Dhanushkodi, a village Lisa and I visted 10 years ago on our trip around India, when I hear about the tidal wave that killed so many people yesterday.
We’d read that Dhanushkodi had been a small town with regular train sevice until it was swept away by a cyclone in 1964.
Here’s a news story on Dhanushkodi that points out how the cylcomne was almost exactly 40 years ago.

I found them by chance just by the NH 49 as I was returning from land's end at Dhanushkodi.
These were the rails that carried the Boat mail to Dhanushkodi, now buried under the sand by the floods of 1964.
That is the old Dhanushkodi station before the land's end terminus.
