During the rule of the Paramara dynasty, Dhar was famous throughout India as a centre of culture and learning, especially under king Bhoj (1010-1060).
Dhar became a princely state of British India, in the Bhopawar agency of the Central India Agency.

An indefinite curfew was imposed today in Dhar, near Indore in Madhya Pradesh, following incidents of arson and clashes between the police and activists of the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM).
There was considerable tension in Dhar even on Tuesday, and the district authorities had to enforce prohibitory orders under Section 144 to prevent the Manch activists and others from entering the Bhojshala.
