Dharan is a major town in Eastern Nepal, in the Sunsari district, at the foot of the hills at the edge of the Terai.
Dharan is homeland of the Kiranti people (Rai and Limbu); however, other peoples like Newar, Brahman, Chetris, Tamang, etc., can be found here, making Dharan a multi-lingual community with different languages and various dialects spoken.
Because of the multi-racial structure, Dharan has been the meeting point of different cultures, with Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim groups all present.

Dharan is the director of the Berkeley Composites Labortaory, a state-of-the-art facility where he and his colleagues design, test, and fabricate new materials that will eventually be used in myriad structures, from buildings to airplanes to space vehicles.
Dharan's specialty is carbon fiber composites, materials in which carbon threads are woven or braided in specific directions to provide incredible strength with very low weight.
Inside Dharan's fabrication laboratory at the Richmond Field Station, the researchers are constructing and testing the hinged booms that will unfurl to deploy the sensors once the 200-pound microsatellites are in orbit.

ME professor Hari Dharan and graduate students Tien Tan, Tyler Williams, and Arezki Rahman are fabricating essential components for the mission, a $173 million NASA program known as THEMIS, or Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions.
As director of the Berkeley Composites Laboratory, Dharan and his colleagues design, test, and fabricate new composite materials with high-performance properties, such as fiberglass, for use in structures from buildings to airplanes and space vehicles.
Dharan's specialty is carbon fiber composites, which combine incredible strength with very low weight and are ideal for space, where the approximate cost of launching something into orbit is roughly $15,000 per kilogram.

As a receipient of this year's Fulbright Scholar grant, ME professor C.K. Hari Dharan, director of the Berkeley Composites Laboratory, will teach overseas during the 2001-02 academic year.
A two-time Fulbright Scholar, Dharan founded the composites laboratory for research, design, manufacture, and testing of composites and advanced materials and developed a graduate study program that includes new courses on composites and advanced materials.
Dharan is also a principal investigator in the space systems group of the Samuel L. Silver Space Sciences Laboratory.

DHARAN, May 20 - The beautiful, hundred years old, eastern foothill town of Dharan, which boasted of departing crisp and tardy Lahures with dreams in their eyes, is now in the grip of youngsters who drown their dreams in drug.
Kamal Tigela, the Director at Punarjeevan Kendra (PJK) Drug Rehabilitation Center says, "The growth rate of drug abusers stands at 3 percent, but the number of individual addicts is on the rise." In the last six months, three youths aged between 19-25 have died of drug overdose.
The finding of brown sugar on the person of a 22 years old local youth on 28th Baisakh symbolizes that drug abuse in Dharan is already at an extremely advanced stage.
