MANUSMRTI AS SOCIO-POLITICAL CONSTITUTION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The first authors of Manava Dharmasastra represented diverse sections of the larger society and had to arrive at a consensus through judicious compromises in order to carry through their mission of arriving at a credible, lasting and just social integration, I have pointed out.
These jurists were eager to ensure that the British Crown that did not then seem to be in danger of falling to the earth on the Indian soil remained but a symbol of a powerless imperial grandeur and a court of final appeal for mercy.
Manusmrti, that is, Manava Dharmasastra was a consensus arrived at during the last decades of the long Vedic era by a select group of experienced sages who did not all think alike and who represented different sections of the larger society.

 CHAPTER XVII
The Dharmasastra literature which consists of the sutras and the sastras forms a codified body of socio-religious mandates and seeks to complement the spirit revealed in the Vedas.
Thus, the various schools of Dharmasastras as well as the traditional commentaries, while seeking to understand the spirit of dharma, through the concepts of steya and danda, remained focused on moksa, the ultimate goal of human life.
Commentators on the Dharmasastra such as Medhatithi, Vijnaneswara are comparable to Thomas Aquinas or Augustine in terms of their authority in the Hindu interpretative tradition.

The Dharmasastras claimed to be divine in origin and to have been passed on by ancient sages who cannot be identified as historical figures.
