  History of Thailand
Even before the Sukhothai kingdom in the north around Chiang Mai the Lannathai kingdom flourished, which after a long history of indepence or changing alliances with Burma or Ayutthaya became part of the Ayutthaya kingdom finally.
The Dharmashastra remained a tool of Thai law until late in the 19th century.
Beginning with the Portuguese in the 16th century, Ayutthaya had some contact with the West, but until the 1800s, its relations with neighboring nations, as well as with India and China, were of primary importance.

The techniques of the dharmashastra are mainly to state the ancient text, maxim, or stanza and to explain its meaning, where obscure, to reconcile divergent traditions, if necessary by use of the traditional science of interpretation.
Where possible, dharmashastra permits custom to be enforced, if it can be ascertained and if its terms are not repugnant to the principles of life as understood by Brahmans (those of the priestly class).
Brahman ethics have given dharmashastra its color and provided a test under which many customs of the Hindu peoples could be administered by Hindu kings.

 Tribuneindia... Speaking Generally
People don’t buy the Manava Dharmashastra or The Laws of Manu as it is also called because they want to read it, they buy it because they want to burn it — in public bonfires.
At the time these laws were ordered to be compiled —-at the beginning of the Christian era—-Hinduism, the religion of the land, was itself on shaky grounds, threatened by the simpler, straight forward, street-level appeal of Buddhism.
The compilation of the Manav Dharmashastra, was Hinduism’s attempt to put its acts together, as it were.

The word dharma is derived from a verb meaning "to support" or "to uphold," and this is the function that dharma plays in society (which shows why all those translations could make sense in context).
The texts on Dharma (dharmashastras), often referred to as the "Law Books," are most concerned with laying down guidelines for an organized and orderly society, in which each person has a well-defined status and role, based on social status, age, and gender.
The dharmashastra writers presupposed an unequal society, in which birth into high or low status groups was determined by the quality of one's karma (good, bad, or mixed).

 Indiaclub.com: Professor Kane’s Contribution to Dharmasastra Literature : Non-Fiction
And was a prolific author too — his literary writings in English, Marathi and Sanskrit having been estimated to run across nearly 15,000 printed pages.
Yet, M.M. Kane is to stay immortalized for his multivolume History of Dharmashastra: an encyclopaedic, at once authoritative work on ancient India’s religious and civil laws.
Discreetly culled from the prodigious mass of his writings, these essays show how Dr. Kane conjures some of the most obscure, hitherto-unnoticed sources not just to dispel widely-accepted fallacies or straighten out distortions, but (importantly) to project the fabulous legacy of India’s Dharmashastra literature: in both its variegated richness and unflawed authenticity.

BUT IN MAHASIVARATHRI VRATA,THERE IS A STATEMENT IN SKANDAPURANA (AS PER DHARMASHASTRA TEXTS),THAT BREAKING THE FAST IN CHATURDASI IS A GREAT PUNYA.
As per dharmashastra texts,Dwapara Yuga commenced on Maga amavasya and the exact timings of amavasya differ from panchanga to panchanga and hence the confusion..anyway Dwapara Yugadi is an important day for Hindus and we shall also see whether amavasya is an auspicious day or not for many karmas as believed by many..
Many panchangas have given 26 feb 2006 as Tiruvona vrata (sravana vrata)..But our dharmashastra texts such as vaidyanatha dikshitayam, which has analysed several puranas, smritis etc.,has not mentioned anything about sravana vrata but only about ekadasi vrata,Sri Ramanavami vrata etc...How these panchanga makers mislead us,is a real tragedy..
