Dharmayuddha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dharmayuddha is a Sanskrit word made up of two roots: dharma meaning righteousness, and yuddha meaning warfare.
Dharmayuddha also signifies that the war is not fought for gain or selfish reasons.
Beyond the Mahabharata, the principles of dharmayuddha are refered to in many other ancient Indian texts, including the Ramayana and the Dharmashastras or law texts.

Strategic Thinking in Ancient India and China - Kautilya and Sunzi - Hindupedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
It is probably a comment on the limits of ideology when it comes to applying it to practical matters that despite the strong “religious” base of Indian thinking, a strong school of realpolitik also appeared in India side by side with it.
Thus, ancient Indian thinkers produced two schools of war, diplomacy and interstate relations; the dharmayuddha (ethical warfare) school; and the kutayuddba (devious warfare) school.
And in the case of the wars fought by Emperor Ashoka, while all of them were presumably won by the methods of kutayuddha, after the conquests Ashoka himself turned a complete pacifist.

Duryodhana repeatedly kept accusing his Commander-in-chief, Drona, that he was not fighting at his best because of his love for the Pandavas.
Irked by these accusations, Drona, who had then been fighting within the rules of a Dharmayuddha or righteous war, using fair means, started using unfair means - he started using celestial/divine weapons on ordinary soldiers.
In desperation, a plan was hatched to inform Drona that his son Asswatthama had been killed.

The Geeta, a part of the great Mahabharat, is a treatise on fighting a righteous war, like the one we are faced with today, to turn an escapist Arjun into a determined warrior.
There is a world of difference between Geeta's exhortation for a Dharmayuddha, waging war for righteousness and justice, and the Quranic Jehad for expansion of Arab or Mohammedan imperialism based on the theory of Dar-ul-Islam and Dar-ul-Harb, or Momin and Kafir.
For the past 50 years, Hindu Dharmacharyas, mesmerised by the misplaced Gandhian non-violence and Nehru's pseudo-secularism, have been playing havoc with their holy books by focusing attention to self salvation alone, ignoring performance of one's duty faithfully as a member of the society.

This small but cleverly argued volume consists of three chapters.
The title of the first chapter raises the question: "The Mahabharata War - A dharmayuddha?" Mehendale considers two possible definitions of the term dharmayuddha.
It may mean "a war fought as a duty (dharma) by a ksatriya," in which case the answer to the question is clear even before the war begins: "the Kuruksetra war turns out to be a dharmayuddha for the Pandavas, but not for the Kauravas" (p.

All over the globalizing neo-capitalisms in the Orient, the niceties still count — gentry education abroad and the return of the elite to rule their native domains.
What is new is the unpredictability of violence, ignited by abstractions dealing with doom — such as neo-Christian ‘crusades’ in defence of the North Atlantic culture, jihad for neo-Islamic intolerance, dharmayuddha for a return to Sanskritic pristineness.
These are new ideas, cannibalized from older, more liberal versions.
