At least 17 school children, including nine girls, were killed and 40 injured in a bomb explosion at an official Independence Day function in Assam's Dhemaji town on Sunday.
The powerful blast took place at around 9:00am at the entrance of the Dhemaji College when the official I-Day celebration of the district was about to begin killing 16 children on the spot.
One child succumbed to injuries at the Dhemaji Civil Hospital.

The flood situation in Dhemaji continued to be grim with the rail tracks washed away by the river changing its course there and reconstruction works were on for a new rail route, the minister said.
Besides relief camps opened in Dhemaji, Sarkar said, relief materials had been sent to the flood affected districts and doctors along with medicines deployed to provide health care to the people there.

GUWAHATI, June 22: The flood situation in Assam's Dhemaji district today remained grim while the water level of all the rivers in Bongaigaon district was rising following incessant rains.
In Dhemaji, the water level of river Jiadhal was rising alarmingly and had washed away a portion of the railway line at Kekuri village near Samarajan.
The flood situation in the remaining districts continues to improve with the water level of the rivers receding.

 Dhemaji blast mastermind arrested
The Assam police on Thursday arrested a top United Liberation Front of Asom militant, suspected mastermind of the Independence Day blast in Dhemaji district which left 17, including ten school children, dead.
Dalami Dutta alias Anju Dutta, a self-styled 'lieutenant' of  ULFA's armed wing, was apprehended from the Puthi Nadhi village under the Mariani police station, Jorhat Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar said.
The SP said as per information available from intelligence sources, Dalami, who is "organising cell in-charge of the outfit's 28th battalion," is suspected to be the mastermind of the Dhemaji blast.
