  Dhivehi - Wikipedia

Maldivian language also underwent a certain conversion as a result of contact with the outside world.
Perhaps blending rather than converting better describes the evolution of Dhives Akuru to Thaana, the present-day script.
of Thaana is from right to left, unlike Dhives Akuru, probably to accommodate the many Arabic words then in everyday use.

The Dhivehi script also underwent a dramatic change through the influence of another language namely Arabic.
The script changed from Dhives Akuru (written from left to write) to Thaana Akuru (written from right to left) around 1700 A.D. This dramatic change in script was brought about mainly to accommodate Arabic words into the script.
In the late 1970s the Thaana script was replaced by the “Latin script”, where Dhivehi was written in the Roman script, for a brief period of time.
