As well as having fresh water and access to the sea, the island was a good strategic choice from the point of view of defence, being formed by two creeks connected to the mainland by a channel, which could only be crossed at low tide.
In 1761, Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa led his people from Liwa to Abu Dhabi island, and soon a small settlement of around 20 barasti huts had been built.
Although Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa founded a settlement on the island, it was his son, Sheikh Shakhbut (1793-1816), who permanently transferred his capital there from Al Mariyah in Liwa.
