		Shakbut's father, Dhiyab bin Isa, had sent a hunting party from Liwa in 1761 which tracked a gazelle to a brackish spring on the island.

		As well as having fresh water and access to the sea, the island was a good strategic choice from the point of view of defence, being formed by two creeks connected to the mainland by a channel, which could only be crossed at low tide.
		In 1761, Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa led his people from Liwa to Abu Dhabi island, and soon a small settlement of around 20 barasti huts had been built.
