  Science Fair Projects - Dhlinza Forest
They are the most important forests in southern Africa from the aspect of unique biodiversity.
Dhlinza is the home of more than 65 species of birds, including the endangered Spotted Thrush, rare Delegorgue Pigeon, magnificent Purplecrested Lourie and Narina Trogon.
The name Dhlinza is derived from Zulu meaning a gravelike place of meditation after the peaceful setting.

 Canopy walkway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canopy walkways are bridges between and in the canopy of a forest; mostly linked up with platforms inside or around the trees.
They were originally intended as access to the upper regions of ancient forests for scientist who conduct canopy research.
Today they serve as ecotourism attractions, such as the canopy boardwalk in Dhlinza Forest, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Plentiful in Kruger National Park and Addo Elephants Park, the Dhlinza Forest Nature Reserve (Zululand) and the Wankie National Park, and of course in a number of private and provincial nature reserves.
The leopard and the great crowned eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus) of the forests are their worst natural enemies.
Vervets are active agents in the forest seed dispersal.

 TRIP REPORT
Mist shrouded the forest when we arrived and the birds were only just beginning to call.
The forest is quite beautiful, occurring in patches between granite outcrops and rolling grasslands.
Forest birding was excellent along the track which was clearly, not often used.

The 200 ha Dhlinza Forest is a small but beautiful patch of indigenous hardwood forest.
It covers five distinct ecosystems varying from dry thorn scrub to tropical forest and bordered by giant dunes, beaches and tropical reefs, has 'Big Five' game viewing, and is the only place in the world where hippos, crocodiles and sharks share the same lagoon.

The pristine forest supports endemics such as the endangered Cape Parrot (the brown-headed nominate race, now considered a separate species, which numbers fewer than 400 individuals); Knysna Turaco, Chorister Robin-Chat, Bush Blackcap, Barratt`s Warbler, Cape Batis, Lesser Double-collared Sunbird, Swee Waxbill and Forest Canary.
Forests on the western shores of the lake hold additional specials, notably African Broadbill, Neergaard`s Sunbird and Pink-throated Twinspot.
The unique Tongaland Sand Forest around the hides of Kubube and Kumasinga, close to the park`s main camp, is excellent for Crested Guineafowl, African Broadbill, Gorgeous Bush-Shrike, (Eastern) Bearded Scrub-Robin and three of the reserve`s near-endemics: Rudd’s Apalis, Neergaard`s Sunbird, and the beautiful Pink-throated Twinspot, all of which are common here.

 Eshowe
Today Eshowe is a market town, with a 100 km radius catchment area, two shopping centres, a main bus station serving the hinterland, a major hospital, and several schools.
The family toured the Dlinza Forest and spent a night in 'The Residency' in Eshowe.
Eshowe served as the seat of the first Black Diocesan Bishops in South Africa, of the Anglican and Catholic Church.

 Indicator Birding
Arriving in Eshowe in the afternoon, we checked into our accommodation, and then made our way to the Dhlinza Forest, which was very quiet - not atypical of this time of year, possibly only a few Spotted Thrush remain at this altitude, and the search for this species was in vain.
A dawn start in the dune forest near the town of St Lucia offered a subdued dawn chorus - as is characteristic in March.
As the forest received it's first morning warmth, birdsong increased dramatically, and we heard the chatter of yellow-bellied Bulbuls, the sweet melody of the Brown Scrub-Robin and the distant hooting of Woodward's Batis.

Situated in the town of Eshowe on the south-western side.
A one kilometer path runs through the forest from the picnic sites to the other forest entrance in Saunders Street.
Approximately 20 pairs of endangered Spotted Ground Thrush and two pairs of Black Sparrowhawk as well as Crowned Eagle breed in the Dlinza Forest.

The day was not finished yet and we proceeded to Xumeni Forest for the late afternoon where we enjoyed an outstanding sighting of seventeen Cape Parrots, one of the rarest birds in Southern Africa.
The forest birding was slow however we scored further Cape Parrots, Orange Ground-Thrush, Red-chested Cuckoo and Forest Canary.
NOTE: This nominate brown-necked Podocarpus forest form of the Cape Parrot has been split off from the more widespread grey-headed savannah form (P. suahelicus), and is now considered to be one of the most endangered birds in Africa with a declining population of less than 600 individuals.

We had done so well on forest birds at Magoebaskloof that we were only looking for a few key species here.
The forests were busy and we heard Livingstone’s Turacos calling in the distance and many White-eared Barbets in their holes.
Dhlinza is a great place and I was the only one to see some Delegorgue’s Pigeons fly from the canopy but Lemon Dove, Scaly-throated Honeyguide as well as a calling male Emerald Cuckoo were all seen well before we left.

This wonderful park conserves some of the best examples of Sand Forest on the edge of Lake St Lucia and is an excellent location for Yellowbill (Green Malkoha), Blue-mantled Crested-Flycatcher, Scaly-throated Honeyguide and Narina Trogon.
This beautiful forest reserve supports an avifauna combining both coastal and mist belt bird species and we will search for African Goshawk, the rare Delegorgue’s Pigeon, Narina Trogon, Purple-crested Turaco, Crowned and noisy Trumpeter Hornbill, Square-tailed Drongo, Chorister Robin-Chat, Gray Cuckoo-shrike and the highly endangered Spotted Ground-Thrush.
South Africa’s only forest canopy walkway is situated here and we will spend most of our morning birding from this superb viewpoint.

Our lodge at Ingeli nestled near to a beautiful stretch of indigenous forest, and at dawn we were right in the thick of it on a broad track peering up at the massive Yellow-wood trees.
Black Saw-wing Swallows flitted past us as we were finishing off in the forest, and back at the hotel two Black Crakes scampered along the edge of the lawn next to the mirror-calm lake.
Once inside this impressive patch of forest all eyes were peeled for the target bird.

Dhlinza Forest with its spectacular aerial boardwalk and canopy tower allowed the group views of Black-headed Oriole, Sombre Greenbul and Collared Sunbird followed by breakfast in a forest clearing!
Time was spent exploring coastal dunes and forests of the St Lucia wetlands - a World Heritage Site.
In the rare sand forest we saw Neergard's Sunbird, Pink-throated Twinspot and Gorgeous Bush Shrike.

Bird the mist forest at dawn before leaving the cool uplands for the warm and humid Zululand coast.
The Dhlinza Forest Nature Reserve (open 7:30 am to 5 pm) is situated at the end of Kangelia Street on the western outskirts of Eshowe.
