The Dhofar 026 meteorite, found on March 6, 2000, near Dhofar 025 (18degrees13.6'N, 54degrees06.7' E), is a rounded brownish gray stone 148 g in mass, without a fused crust.
Dhofar 026 is made up of anorthosite breccia with relatively scarce fragments of minerals and anorthositic rocks, which are submerged in a fully devitrified fine-grained matrix.

Dhofar stretches from Ra'su sh-Sharbatat till the border with Yemen, and has an estimate of 200,000 inhabitants, with Salalah as the only city of some size.

Dhofar 019 is doleritic and contains olivine grains with Fe/(Mg+Fe) ratios of 0.4-0.75, whilst these seem to be absent from Dhofar 378.

In 1965, the Dhofar Liberation Front (DLF) was formed in the southernmost province of Oman, in opposition to the rule of Sultan bin Taimur.
Dhofar had a population of only some 40.000 at the time (out of a total of 750.000 Omanis), and the revolutionary movement received considerable support from the locals aggrieved by their poor living conditions: the country was at the time still living in the 14th Century.
Despite increasing problems, and the fact that by the time the PFLOAG was in control of all of the Dhofar Province, the Sultan of Oman was still hesitant to increase the defence spending, although the problems as well as income from oil exports were growing.

By July 1970, the province of Dhofar in western Oman was almost entirely in the hands of Communist-backed rebels belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Occupied Arabian Gulf (PFLOAG).
When the SAS were deployed to Oman in the early 1970s they embarked on a hearts and minds campaign to win the Dhofaris back to the new Sultan.
Another group in Yemen, The PFLOAG (Adoo) were faring a little better with supplies by the Communist Chinese and Soviet Union and made an offer to the DLF to amalgamate to share their fight.
