All along the bank of the river Chambal the country is deeply intersected by ravines; low ranges of hills in the western portion of the state supply inexhaustible quarries of fine-grained and easily-worked red sandstone.
Finally, in 1806, the territories of Dholpur, Bari and Rajakhera were handed over to the maharaj rana Kirat Singh, ancestor of the present chiefs of Dholpur, in exchange for his state of Gohad, which was ceded to Sindhia.

On the death of the last Ruler of Dholpur in 1954 without any male issue, a controversy, as to who was entitled to the rulership, arose between the petitioner, who was a senior member of a collateral branch, and the son adopted by the widow of the last ruler.
The estate left behind by the said Ruler of Dholpur is claimed to be an impartible estate and, therefore, the petitioner claims to be entitled to the said estate according to law and custom of lineal male primogeniture.
On IO May, 1949 the Dholpur State and other States of the Matsya Union which merged with the United State of Rajasthan adopted the covenant of the Rulers comprised in the United State of Rajasthan.

PREDECESSORS AND STATE HISTORY: Predecessor state of Dholpur was founded in circa 700AD, Raja Dholan Deo Tonwar founded Dholpur in 1004, his dynasty ruling till 1505, when it was merged with GOHAD state existing as such till 1806 when Rana KHIRAT SINGH of Gohad (1803/1805), became the first ruler of Dholpur.
Maharaj Rana KHIRAT SINGH 1806/1836, received Dholpur, Bari, Rajakhera and the taluka of Sri Muttra in exchange for Gohad, which was made over to the Maharaja of Gwalior in 1806, first Jat ruler of Dholpur, married and had issue.
Kunwar Devender Singh, left Dholpur before attaining his majority and adopted the life of an ordinary individual in Badrinath.
