Based in New York City, the Dia Art Foundation owns perhaps the leading collection of art from the 1960s and 1970s, including major works by Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Richard Serra, Donald Judd, Agnes Martin, and Andy Warhol.
The Dia currently supports the ongoing development of James Turrell's "Roden Crater" project in the Painted Desert of Arizona, and Michael Heizer's City complex in eastern Nevada.
In 2003 the Dia Art Foundation opened the Dia:Beacon Riggio Galleries in a former Nabisco plant in Beacon, New York.

Since its inception, Dia has defined itself as a vehicle for the realization of extraordinary artists' projects that might not otherwise be supported by more conventional institutions.
Beginning in early 1995, Dia initiated a series of artists' projects for the web by commissioning projects from artists who are interested in exploring the aesthetic and conceptual potentials of this medium.
In this project, created especially for Dia's website, Hiller maps her long-standing interest in dream states onto the nebulous realm of the web using interactive colorfields and a soundtrack in six languages.

Hudson River School Drawings from Dia Art Foundation was organized by The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College to celebrate the May 2003 opening in the Hudson River Valley of Dia:Beacon, a museum that houses the permanent collection of Dia Art Foundation, a contemporary art organization based in New York City.
Organized by Dia Art Foundation in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the Dan Flavin retrospective premiered at the National Gallery of Art in 2004 before traveling to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, in 2005.
Dia Art Foundation was founded in New York City in 1974 to commission and support American and European contemporary art.

Dia Art Foundation, one of the world’s preeminent contemporary art institutions, is opening a new museum to house its renowned but rarely seen permanent collection, comprising major works of art from the 1960s to the present.
The Dia Art Foundation was created in 1974 by the German art dealer Heiner Friedrich and the Houston arts patron Philippa de Menil, who is his wife.
Dia was one of the first art centers in Chelsea, more than a decade before that area became populated with contemporary art galleries.

Since the Dia Art Foundation was created in 1974, it has been something of a pioneer.
Dia plans to move from its two spaces on West 22nd Street to 820 Washington Street, at Gansevoort Street.

Dia brought together five of the major monumental paintings from collections in the U.S. and abroad, plus a group of related works on paper.

Dia’s exhibition of eighteen paintings from this significant period in Martin’s career is organized as part of the exhibition program at Dia:Beacon.

It is comprised of 400 polished stainless steel poles installed in a grid array measuring one mile by one kilometer.
Commissioned and maintained by Dia Art Foundation, The Lightning Field is recognized internationally as one of the late-twentieth century's most significant works of art and exemplifies Dia's commitment to the support of art projects whose nature and scale exceed the limits normally available within the traditional museum or gallery.

 Hudson River School Drawings On View At Frick Art Museum
The drawings included in the exhibition were assembled by one of Dia's principal artists, Dan Flavin (1933-1996), during the late 1970s and early 1980s when he and Dia were planning a museum for his own work in the Hudson River Valley.
By drawing from the landscape, he wanted to interpret not only its unique qualities and energy, but he wanted his drawings to serve as existential traces of his encounter with the land, sky and light and the people who moved in and through his field of perception as he drew.

The Dia Art Foundation, a New York-based non-profit for contemporary art founded in 1974, has announced plans to build a $35 million gallery space in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, adjacent to the Highline, an abandoned elevated railway that is being converted into a park.
Dia: Chelsea, a converted warehouse, opened in 1987 and closed in 2004 for renovations.
Dia also has a permanent collection at the mammoth 300,000 square feet Dia: Beacon in upstate New York, as well as other projects scattered throughout the United States.

To serve the purposes of the commission, in 1979 the Foundation acquired the former New York Mercantile Exchange building at 6 Harrison Street in lower Manhattan.
The activities of the Dream House were open to the public and included multiple inter-related sound and light environments, exhibitions, performances, research and listening facilities, archives, studio recording, publishing, and the administration of the artists' collected works.
Due to extreme financial reverses Dia Art Foundation sold the building and terminated the commission in 1985.

During a dry period in 1970, when artist Robert Smithson constructed a spiral earthwork sculpture in the Great Salt Lake in Utah, he discovered that the visibility of his creation would be at the mercy of fluctuating water levels.
"As an artist, it is interesting to take on the persona of a geological agent and actually become part of that process rather than overcome it," the late Smithson said in 1972, according to a Dia Art Foundation press release.

 Riggio to Leave Dia Chair - 5/17/2006 - Publishers Weekly
Len Riggio will step down as head of the Dia Art Foundation once a successor can be found, the Barnes & Noble chairman told the New York Times today.
Riggio said it was time for someone new to guide Dia’s building plans in New York City.
His departure from the chairmanship of Dia will have no impact on his duties as chairman of B&N. This article originally appeared in the May 17, 2006 issue of PW Daily.
