 Malehealth : Diabetes
While diabetes is often thought to be no big deal and just "something to do with sugar", the truth is that diabetes is an illness with potentially devastating health effects.
At least three in every 100 people in the UK will develop diabetes and 1.8 million people in the UK are thought to have had their diabetes diagnosed (an increase of 400,000 in just eight years).
The great majority of cases of Type 2 diabetes are caused by a combination of resistance of the body to its own naturally produced insulin (this is known as "insulin resistance") and malfunction of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

Diabetes In Control - Diabetes Gene Carries Similar Risk to Obesity
The new study followed healthy middle-aged men in the UK for 15 years, and found that carrying a common variant of the gene increased their risk of developing diabetes by 50 per cent.
Because it is so common, and because the risk is so high, this gene seems to be causing as many cases of diabetes in the UK as obesity, which we know is the biggest risk factor.
Dr Angela Wilson, Director of Research at Diabetes UK which partly funded the study, said: "The findings of this research are very exciting, as Type 2 diabetes results from a complex mix of genetic and lifestyle factors.

Diabetes Monitor - UK Prospective Diabetes Study
As one might expect, based on the DCCT (which showed that tight control decreases complications in people with type 1 diabetes), the UKPDS shows that the risk of complications of diabetes can be reduced dramatically in people with type 2 diabetes.

he UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), the largest clinical study of diabetes ever attempted, has shown for the first time that the life-threatening complications of type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes, often regarded as inevitable, can be reduced by more intensive management using existing treatments.
