Except for a visit to Charleston, S.C., in October, she remained at New York until 8 January 1946. From 15 January 1946 to 27 April 1949 Diablo was based in the Canal Zone participating in fleet exercises and rendering services to surface units in the Caribbean.
Diablo sailed to Key West, Fla., for antisubmarine warfare exercises, from 16 November to 9 December 1947, and operated from New Orleans for the training of naval reservists in March 1948. Diablo arrived at Norfolk, her new home port, 5 June 1949, and alternated training cruises with duty at the Sonar School at Key West.
Her home port became New London in 1952 and she arrived there 17 September to provide training facilities for the Submarine School.

 Richard William Jones
Upon being accepted, he was enrolled in the Submarine School at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Conn., and was graduated with the class of July 1960.
He was then assigned to the submarine U.S.S. Diablo (SS 479), in which he became qualified as a submariner on August 17, 1961, and was awarded his silver dolphins.
He was later selected for training in the nuclear power program, and successfully completed the year-long course at New London and Windsor Locks, Conn. On February 4, 1963, Richard was assigned to the submarine U.S.S. Thresher (SSN 593).

Some boats with a Portsmouth Sail had an SV-radar and needed extra room to house the screen, thus had a bulge at the sail top.
Later modifications put the SS or SS2 radars on these and other boats which had a smaller screen and had an indicator with interlocks which allowed the mast to be housed only with the screen in certain angular positions.
Also, some GUPPY II and GUPPY III boats had their sails extended higher above the waterline, the "Northern Sail," to raise the bridge, allowing it to be manned in more severe weather.

In mid 1945, I was assigned to a new sub, USS Diablo (SS 479) and trained in the U.S. til she was combat ready.
We exited the Panama Canal and outfitted in Pearl Harbor.
The seas were too rough to rescue the man with a boat so a rescue swimmer was dropped from a helicopter and the man (Philip Falzon) was airlifted in a sling.
